Casual Youth Worker is to provide safety and security, continuous supervision, and support to young persons in custody at the PEI Youth Centre. The role focuses on delivering structured daily programs that promote the development of essential life skills and support emotional well-being. As part of a collaborative case management team, the Youth Worker helps create and implement individualized case plans, working closely with families and community agencies to support their needs. The goal is to assist young persons in successfully transitioning back into their families and communities while ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Providing 24-hour supervision, safety, and security to remanded and sentenced Offenders based on legislative requirements;
- Delivering structured daily programs;
- Ensures all activities comply with community and correctional services Policy and Procedures and relevant legislation, including the Youth Criminal Justice Act, FOIPP, and Occupational Health and Safety regulations and policies;
- Performs routine safety and security checks, including young persons counts and searches of interior and exterior areas for contraband;
- Communicates all movements of youth to the Admissions/Discharge Unit via two-way radio;
- Maintains and inspects equipment such as sharps, cuffs, shackles, electronic wand, search kit, court bag, and emergency preparedness kit;
- Documents, monitors and screens incoming phone calls;
- Completes admission and discharge procedures;
- Provides orientation for new admissions to the PEI Youth Centre;
- Informs young persons of their rights and responsibilities, including information for the Child and Youth Advocate Office;
- Participates in gym and games room activities with youth, role modelling positive attitudes and behaviours related to sportsmanship and positive use of leisure time activities;
- Provides supervision to youth on a 24-hour shift rotation;
- Provides short-term counselling and support to young persons.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from a recognized university with a university degree in social sciences or completion of a relevant community college diploma, i.e. Child and Youth Care Worker, or Correctional Officer;
- Experience working with vulnerable youth or considerable related experience in a custody setting may be considered;
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record. A successful candidate must be able to obtain a Class 4 driver’s license;
- Current First Aid/CPR certificate;
- Successful candidates must be able to provide a Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Check;
- Strong problem-solving, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently or as a team;
- Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered; Additional relevant education and experience will be considered an asset.
Other Qualifications:
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
- Good previous work attendance.
