THE OPPORTUNITY
Our client is a well-established, independently owned supermarket chain serving a loyal, service-driven customer base in Toronto.
This is a true Store Manager role with full accountability for people leadership, store operations, merchandising execution, and obtaining financial objectives. The environment is traditional, relationship-focused, and quality-driven, requiring a hands-on manager who understands how to run a busy grocery store where customers value authenticity, fresh product, and personal service.
This opportunity is best suited to a Career Supermarket Store Manager with experience drawn from independent and higher end stores. Experience with Italian and European specialty food products is mandatory.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Full ownership of sales, profit, gross margin, shrink, labour, and controllable expenses
Lead, coach, and develop Department Managers and store teams to consistently deliver exceptional customer service
Build schedules aligned with traffic patterns, sales volume, and labour budgets
Oversee accurate ordering, receiving, inventory control, and product rotation
Execute planograms, promotional programs, end displays, and cross-merchandising
Partner with Department Managers to drive productivity, standards, and operational efficiency
Provide the leadership required to build and maintain positive morale and effectively manage and motivate a staff of up to100 team members:
by being an empathetic communicator: clearly explaining goals while listening to staff concerns and using constructive feedback;
by being collaborative & inclusive: treating every employee with respect, avoiding dismissive or confrontational behavior;
by being a supportive problem solver: focusing on coaching and developing team members rather than micromanagement.
Maintain strict compliance with food safety, health & safety, and regulatory standards
Develop and maintain strong relationships with vendors and suppliers
Monitor local competitive activity and adjust pricing and in-store programs as required
Support community-focused initiatives that reinforce the store’s reputation and customer loyalty
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS
(Please read carefully — this role is not suitable for non-grocery and non supermarket backgrounds)
Minimum 5 years as a Store Manager in a supermarket, preferably an independent with an Italian, European or multi-cultural orientation
Demonstrated experience managing fresh departments and specialty product assortments
Proven track record managing retail P&L, labour budgets, shrink, and inventory
Hands-on, floor-focused leadership style
Strong customer-service mindset aligned with a traditional, relationship-driven clientele
This role is not intended for candidates whose background is limited to QSR, restaurants, cafés, apparel, luxury retail, warehouse/distribution, telecom, or non-grocery retail.

Base salary: $80,000–$100,000 (commensurate with experience)
