About the Role:
Rugged Edge Holdings is seeking a skilled and self-motivated Heavy-Duty Mechanic Apprentice (2nd, 3rd or 4th Year) to join our team in Smithers, BC. This role supports the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of a diverse fleet of equipment used in mining, exploration, and remote logistics operations.
The ideal candidate is safety-focused, mechanically inclined, and comfortable working in a fast-paced shop environment while gaining hands-on experience alongside a Journeyperson Heavy Duty Mechanic. This position includes both shop and field work, including remote camp assignments as required for operations.
Key Responsibilities:
· Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain a fleet of heavy equipment including: loaders, skid steers, forklifts, trucks, trailers, and service pickup trucks
· Perform preventative maintenance and safety inspections on all fleet equipment
· Troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems
· Maintain accurate service records, logs, and repair documentation
· Prioritize repairs in coordination with the Fleet and Shop Manager
· Ensure a clean, safe, and organized work environment in the shop and yard
· Support field repairs or recovery efforts if equipment issues occur off-site
· Contribute to continuous improvement of maintenance protocols and shop operations
Qualifications & Requirements:
· 2nd/3rd/4th Year Apprentice with solid hands-on experience
· Valid Class 5 driver’s license (Class 1 or 3 an asset)
· Strong knowledge of mobile equipment, truck & trailer systems, and diesel engines
· Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic tools
· Organized, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently and as part of a team
· Prior experience in the mining, exploration, or remote logistics sector is an asset
· Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions when needed
· Must be willing and able to work in remote camp environments as required for operations
Work Conditions:
· Full-time, year-round position based out of the Rugged Edge Holdings shop in Smithers, BC
· Monday to Friday schedule with occasional overtime or weekend work during peak project periods
· Shop-based work with travel or field-based support as required
