Western’s Integrated Science program offers students both breadth across the sciences and depth in one particular area of science. Students in the program enroll in Integrated Science courses for breadth, as well as courses in one of nine chosen disciplines for depth.

Graduates of the program will receive an Honours Specialization in Integrated Science with [insert name of discipline here]. The nine disciplines from which students can choose are: Astrophysics, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Genetics, Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, Physics, Synthetic Biology.

Course Information

An exploration of socio-scientific issues facing humanity, including climate change, world hunger, energy/water availability and habitat loss. The interdisciplinary nature and interconnectivity of these issues will be discussed. Students will access the scientific literature and government reports, critically evaluate the data presented and use it to develop cogent arguments. Learning outcomes Classroom and tutorial sessions are intended to help students develop skills in: 1. Demonstrate understanding of how the environment intersects with students respective specializations 2. Critically evaluating how science and society interacts with the environment 3. Summarizing ideas in environment and sustainability, in a way that is suitable for a scientific as well as a general audience 4. Writing a formal paper with critical analysis of a chosen perspective 5. Sharing ideas with peers in a moderated discussion setting 6. Provide and incorporate feedback on your written work in a collaborative setting 7. Communicate scientific ideas with other scientists from outside their area of specialty 8. Form an opinion on an academic work based on weeks of exploring the topics shared within the piece from different perspectives Furthermore, by the end of the course, students will be expected to be able to discuss and answer questions based on: 1. The value provided by the environment 2. Different environmental perspectives and the regulation of the environment and valuable ecosystems in Canada 3. The importance of biodiversity from the genetic level to the whole ecosystem 4. Sources of pollution in the air, water, and on land 5. Human influence on the degradation of the environment 6. The causes and consequences of climate change, and know the policy approaches taken to address climate change 7. Renewable and non-renewable energy sources, where they are most prominent and the climate consequences of each 8. The composition of soils and how advances in agricultural practices have led to an increased ability to feed a growing population 9. How the environment, technology and society intersect and how humans have influenced these intersects throughout our history During each lecture, we will have a planned topic and list of discussion points. After each lecture, the content will be posted but class discussions will not be included. It will be the students job to record important discussion points from class.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for all activities associated with the successful delivery of the course, including but not limited to: developing, preparing, and delivering the course; setting and marking examinations, assessing the academic work of students, and reporting grades.

Candidates must be willing to undertake training as required by the Employer including, but not limited to, training in respect of health and safety, harassment and discrimination, and legislated service standards.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant discipline (or be close to completion) and a demonstrated record of high performance and expertise teaching at the university-level the specific subject area of any course for which they apply. Preference will be given to experience in teaching or researching in the specific subject area of the course applied for.
