Job Overview
A Boat Mechanic / Small Engine Repair Mechanic inspects, diagnoses, services, and repairs boats, outboard motors, and other small gasoline-powered equipment. Role includes testing engines and mechanical components, replacing or repairing worn electrical and mechanical parts, performing scheduled maintenance, and documenting completed work. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of Diacom computer systems for code reading on marine motors.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect, test, diagnose, and repair outboard motors, marine engines, and related small engine equipment.
- Perform routine and seasonal maintenance such as tune-ups, oil changes, winterizing, and summer prep.
- Troubleshoot fuel, ignition, steering, hydraulic, and electrical system issues.
- Adjust, repair, or replace pump, mechanical and electrical components using hand and power tools.
- Test repaired equipment to confirm proper and safe performance before release.
- Prepare repair notes, service records, parts lists, and cost estimates.
- Communicate clearly with customers about work completed, equipment condition, and recommended next steps.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safety-focused shop and service vehicle/work area.
Qualifications
- Experience repairing boats, outboard motors, or small engines.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical, fuel, ignition, and electrical faults using testing and diagnostic equipment.
- Comfortably read work orders, service manuals, and parts information.
- Strong hands-on ability with tools, repair procedures, and preventative maintenance work.
- Valid driver’s licence preferred.
- Completion of secondary school is usually required; apprenticeship training or related courses in small engine or marine repair are considered strong assets.
- Trade certification is an asset.

Work Environment
