About Us
We have a client who designs and manufactures premium trailers for customers across Canada and the United States. They are focused on building durable, high-performance trailers with strong attention to quality, functionality, manufacturability, and long-term customer value.
As the client firm continues to grow, they are looking for an engineering professional who can help strengthen product design, improve manufacturing efficiency, support new product development, and bring disciplined engineering thinking into the trailer design process.
Position Summary
The Design Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, improving, and documenting aluminum trailer products and components. This role requires a practical engineering mindset, strong CAD skills, and the ability to translate customer, production, and business requirements into manufacturable trailer designs.
The ideal candidate understands structural design, welding considerations, load requirements, suspension systems, axles, braking systems, electrical routing, product standardization, and the realities of shop-floor manufacturing. This is not just a desk engineering role. The right person will work closely with production, purchasing, sales, quality, and leadership to develop trailer designs that are strong, efficient, scalable, and profitable to manufacture.
Key Responsibilities
Product Design & Engineering
- Design utility, landscape, dump, and car hauler trailers, frames, components, assemblies, and subassemblies using CAD software.
- Develop new trailer models and improve existing products based on customer needs, dealer feedback, production experience, and market opportunities.
- Create detailed 3D models, 2D drawings, bills of materials, cut lists, and production documentation.
- Ensure designs are structurally sound, practical to manufacture, and aligned with applicable transportation and safety requirements.
- Evaluate trailer geometry, load capacity, weight distribution, axle placement, tongue weight, suspension layout, and overall performance.
- Design for manufacturability, repeatability, quality, and efficient material usage.
Manufacturing Support
- Work directly with production teams to resolve design, fitment, fabrication, welding, assembly, and quality issues.
- Support fixture, jig, tooling, and process improvement projects.
- Identify opportunities to reduce complexity, improve production flow, reduce rework, and standardize components.
- Assist with prototype builds, testing, revisions, and production launch of new products.
- Review field issues, warranty claims, and customer feedback to identify engineering improvements.
Documentation & Systems
- Maintain accurate engineering drawings, revision records, product specifications, and bills of materials.
- Support implementation and improvement of engineering change processes.
- Create clear technical documentation for production, purchasing, service, and sales teams.
- Work with purchasing and suppliers to validate parts, materials, and components.
- Support cost analysis by designing products that balance performance, quality, and production efficiency.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with sales and leadership to understand product requirements and market needs.
- Collaborate with production supervisors and fabricators to ensure designs are practical on the shop floor.
- Support quality control by helping define inspection points, tolerances, and acceptance criteria.
- Provide technical input for dealer support, customer inquiries, and special projects when required.
Required Qualifications
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Strong experience with 3D CAD design software such as SolidWorks, Inventor, Fusion 360, AutoCAD, or similar.
- Ability to create accurate technical drawings and manufacturing documentation.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, structural loading, fabrication, and assembly.
- Practical understanding of metals, welding, fasteners, and fabricated structures.
- Ability to work with production teams in a hands-on manufacturing environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple design priorities and deadlines.
- Clear communication skills with both technical and non-technical team members.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing trailers, truck bodies, agricultural equipment, automotive components, recreational vehicles, or similar products is a significant benefit.
- Knowledge of trailer standards, axle systems, suspension systems, braking systems, lighting, wiring, and transport regulations.
- Experience with sheet metal, CNC cutting, forming, welding, and fixture design.
- Familiarity with finite element analysis, load testing, or structural validation.
- Experience developing bills of materials and supporting ERP/MRP systems.
- Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement experience.
- Experience taking products from concept through prototype, testing, and production release.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The right candidate will be someone who can combine engineering discipline with practical manufacturing judgment. They should be comfortable walking the production floor, talking with welders and assemblers, asking direct questions, and improving designs based on real-world feedback.
This person should be able to design for strength, weight, cost, repeatability, and production speed. Our client needs someone who does not simply create drawings, but helps build a stronger product development system.
Success in This Role Looks Like
- New trailer designs are completed accurately and released into production with fewer issues.
- Existing products become easier, faster, and more cost-effective to manufacture.
- Drawings, BOMs, and specifications are clear, current, and controlled.
- Production teams receive better engineering support and faster design resolution.
- Product quality, consistency, and profitability improve.
- Nordtek develops a stronger internal engineering foundation for future growth.
Compensation
Compensation will be based on experience, technical capability, and fit for the role.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit a resume and an example(s) of relevant design work, product development experience, or CAD/project portfolio materials.
