About Us
Writeoff is an AI-native, fully remote tax and accounting firm serving owner-managed businesses across Canada and the US. We are a full-service finance partner, handling everything from tax and bookkeeping through to controller and CFO-level support for companies doing $1M to $10M in revenue. For many of these businesses, that means senior finance help they could not otherwise justify hiring full-time.
We are a team of four and we are hiring a fifth. We do not perform assurance engagements. No audits, no reviews, no notice to the reader. Our work is tax, bookkeeping, and fractional finance, and we do it without the timesheets, billable hour targets, and busy season culture that most people leave firm life to escape.
Title
Senior Accountant
Reports To
Founder & CEO
Location and Work Model
Fully remote, anywhere in Canada. Permanent, full-time. If we introduce an in-person option in future, it will remain fully optional.
Compensation
$70,000 to $100,000 per year, based on experience. Candidates holding a CPA designation with strong controller or fractional finance experience may be considered at the upper end of the listed range or above it.
Job Overview
The Senior Accountant will own end-to-end accounting for a portfolio of clients, spanning foundational bookkeeping through to client-facing fractional work. The role carries direct client ownership from day one: you will prepare the numbers, present them, and be the person the client relies on.
This role blends hands-on and senior work by design. One day you might be reconciling accounts in detail; the next, helping a founder navigate a tightening cash position. As a lean team, we all stay close to the details, and we think that is a feature, not a limitation.
What You'll Do
- Full-cycle bookkeeping across a client portfolio, including account reconciliations, categorizations, and accruals
- AR and AP management, bill pay, contractor payments, and AR collections
- Payroll processing and HST filings, including source deductions and remittances
- Preparation of monthly financial reporting packages, with analytical commentary
- Building and maintaining client budgets and forecasts, and presenting them monthly or biweekly on client calls and asynchronously in Slack
- Review of bookkeeping prepared by other members of the team
- Day-to-day fractional support across the client base, including stepping into client operations where required
- Onboarding new clients against a defined checklist: connecting bank feeds, securing system access, and getting the engagement operational
- Ongoing client relationship management, including chasing outstanding documentation and records
- Such other duties as the business requires. At our size, scope is fluid.
Competencies and Requirements
- Strong working knowledge of Canadian/US bookkeeping and compliance, including HST, payroll, and source deductions
- Comfort owning a client relationship directly, including difficult conversations about missing records, deadlines, and cash
- Judgment to recognize when something is wrong and the instinct to raise it rather than post it and move on
- Ability to move between detailed transactional work and senior advisory work in the same day without dropping either
- Excellent written communication. The majority of client work happens in Slack
- Excel proficiency, including pivots, lookups, and formula work
- Comfort adopting new systems quickly. Our stack changes as our clients' stacks change.
- Legally authorized to work in Canada and residing in Canada. The role requires Canadian tax and payroll knowledge and overlap with Canadian business hours.
Systems
QuickBooks Online, Xero, Excel, Google Workspace, Slack, Stripe, Wagepoint, Humi, Dext, Ramp, Mercury, Airwallex and more.
Experience with every system listed is not expected.
Education, Training and Experience
- 3 to 10 years of progressive accounting, bookkeeping, or finance experience. This is a genuine range and we are open across it.
- A CPA designation is not required. If you hold one, let us know
- Experience in a client-facing, multi-entity, or fractional environment is an asset
- Experience supporting owner-managed businesses is an asset
Why You'll Love Working Here
- Four weeks of vacation. Not unlimited, which tends to mean nobody takes any. Four weeks, and we expect you to use them.
- No overtime culture. Not in the busy season, not at year end. We scope the workload around the team we have. If we cannot deliver without burning people out, we take on fewer clients.
- Health and dental benefits.
- Permanently remote, anywhere in Canada.
- No timesheets and no billable hour targets.
- High growth potential. Significant ownership, minimal bureaucracy, and visible impact on a growing firm.
Hiring Process
- Apply with your resume and a short note on why this role interests you. No formal cover letter required.
- A 30 minute introductory call with the founder.
- A working conversation about a real client scenario. Not a take-home assignment.
- References and offer.
If we interview you, we will let you know where you stand within 14 days of your final interview, either way.
