Whale Watching Skipper – 2026 Season
Cowichan Bay, Vancouver Island
Ocean Ecoventures is currently hiring a Whale Watching Skipper to operate our vessels from Cowichan Bay for the 2026 whale watching season.
This position involves operating our 12-passenger RHIB vessels on guided whale and wildlife tours while providing a safe, professional and engaging experience for guests visiting Vancouver Island.
Our tours focus on viewing Bigg’s killer whales, humpback whales, seals, sea lions, porpoises and seabirds, while sharing knowledge about the region’s marine environment and conservation practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate our 12-passenger vessels on whale and wildlife tours departing from Cowichan Bay
- Deliver informative and engaging commentary about whales, marine wildlife and the local ecosystem
- Ensure all Transport Canada safety procedures and company operating protocols are followed
- Conduct daily vessel checks and maintain onboard safety equipment
- Monitor marine weather and sea conditions to ensure safe operations
- Provide a welcoming and professional experience for guests from around the world
What We’re Looking For
- Strong boat handling skills and confidence operating small vessels in coastal waters
- A passion for marine wildlife and the ability to share that knowledge with guests
- Professional attitude and strong customer service skills
- Ability to work well within a small team environment
- Availability throughout the tourism season, including weekends and holidays
Required Certifications
- SVOP (Small Vessel Operator Proficiency)
- ROC-M (Marine Radio Certificate)
- Marine First Aid
- MED A2/3 or DVS / SDVBS
Preferred Experience
- Experience operating commercial vessels or working in marine tourism
- Previous whale watching or wildlife guiding experience is an asset
- Interest in marine biology, wildlife interpretation or conservation
Season
The position operates April through October with peak activity during the summer months.
Pay: $32.00-$36.00 per hour
