The Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club is committed to building a vibrant sailing community on Vancouver Island, and we are looking for dedicated CANSail instructors to join our team for the 2026 season. Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Instruct a variety of programs and CANSail levels in various boats (Optimist, 420, FJ, Laser, and the occasional keelboat).
- Supervise and instruct sailors, ensuring a high standard of safety both on and oS the water. Following all SNSYC and Sail Canada protocols.
- Develop and implement detailed lesson plans, adapting teaching methods and activities (both on-the-water and onshore) to suit varying weather conditions and student ability, from beginner to advanced.
- Assist with the daily setup/takedown, maintenance checks, and storage of all equipment to ensure safety and proper functionality and report all equipment issues to the Sailing School Manager.
- Prepare and deliver CANSail Certificates and checklists to sailors and parents/guardians.
- Provide clear instructions on proper life-jacket usage, water safety, and emergency procedures.
- Report any incidents or concerns immediately to the Sailing School Manager.
- Act as a positive role model and mentor for sailors, volunteers, and other instructors, promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, and respect for the marine environment.
- Maintain professional communication with sailors, instructors, volunteers, members, and families.
- Actively participate and attend all training and meetings to continuously develop instructional and leadership skills.
- Complete other tasks as assigned by the Sailing School Manager.
Qualifications & Skills
- Current Sail Canada Instructor Certification (Registered and in good standing)
- Pleasure Craft Operators Card (PCOC)
- Current Coach Boat Safety Certification
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR (or equivalent) Certification
- Restricted Operator Certificate – Maritime (ROC-M) is highly desirable
- Experience as a Sailing Instructor or as a Volunteer with Learn-to-Sail programs
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- A passion for teaching
- Must be able to work various hours, including weekends, evenings, and holidays as required by the program
