Job Overview
The Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting and enhancing our workplace health and safety and human resources programs. This role is responsible for assisting in the development, implementation, and monitoring of health and safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for all employees and compliance with relevant legislation. The Health and Safety Specialist is also responsible for supporting the HR Department to ensure effective and efficient operations.
Responsibilities
Program Development & Implementation
- Assist in the creation, rollout, and continuous improvement of health and safety policies and procedures.
- Work with department heads to integrate safety into operational procedures and business processes.
Inspections, Audits & Risk Management
- Conduct routine inspections of equipment, facilities, and work areas to identify hazards and unsafe practices.
- Maintain a risk register and help prioritize actions to mitigate identified risks.
Training & Communication
- Develop and deliver engaging health and safety training programs (e.g., fire safety, manual handling, PPE usage, hazard communication).
- Maintain clear and open communication about safety performance and issues, including safety bulletins, and team briefings.
Incident Response & Investigation
- Respond promptly to incidents and near-misses, ensuring that they are reported, recorded, and investigated appropriately.
- Coordinate root cause analyses and ensure timely implementation of corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
- Compile detailed reports for internal stakeholders and regulatory bodies when necessary.
Compliance & Record Keeping
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, standards, and industry codes of practice (e.g., OSHA, local/state regulations).
- Keep up-to-date records of training attendance, incident logs, risk assessments, inspections, and safety metrics.
- Prepare and submit periodic safety performance reports to management.
Emergency Preparedness
- Assist in the development and testing of emergency response plans, including evacuation drills and first-aid readiness.
- Ensure first-aid kits, fire extinguishers, and emergency exits are maintained and compliant.
- All other duties as assigned
Human Resources
- Support Human Resources initiatives, including helping with HR events, assisting with new hire check-ins, leading 5S implementation, and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 2-5 years of experience in a similar health and safety role.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices (e.g., OHSA, WHMIS, HSE standards).
- Certification in health and safety is a plus.
- Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and implement effective solutions.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Pay: Up to $70,000.00 per year
