Geotechnical Engineer — Intermediate to Senior
DMT Geosciences is seeking an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to support and lead multidisciplinary projects across the environmental, mining, energy, and civil sectors.
This is an opportunity for an intermediate- to senior-level professional who enjoys solving complex subsurface challenges, working directly with clients, and collaborating with geophysicists, geologists, engineers, and field teams. The successful candidate will play an important role in project delivery, technical leadership, client development, and the continued growth of our geotechnical capabilities.
At DMT Geosciences, you will have the opportunity to take ownership of your work, build meaningful client relationships, and contribute across a diverse range of projects without being limited to a narrow role within a large organization.
What you will do
- Plan, manage, and deliver geotechnical investigations and engineering assessments.
- Develop investigation programs that integrate geotechnical drilling, sampling, laboratory testing, instrumentation, and geophysical methods.
- Interpret subsurface data and prepare geotechnical models, analyses, recommendations, and design parameters.
- Complete or oversee assessments related to foundations, slope stability, earthworks, excavation support, settlement, ground improvement, mine infrastructure, tailings, environmental sites, and energy-related developments.
- Work closely with DMT’s geophysics and geoscience teams to develop integrated solutions for complex site conditions.
- Prepare proposals, scopes of work, budgets, schedules, technical memoranda, and engineering reports.
- Serve as a primary technical and project contact for clients.
- Communicate technical findings clearly to clients, regulators, contractors, and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Manage project scope, schedule, budget, quality, and risk.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and field personnel.
- Support business development through client relationships, proposal preparation, presentations, and identification of new opportunities.
- Participate in field programs and site visits as required.
- Apply DMT’s health, safety, quality, and professional practice requirements throughout all project activities.
What you bringMandatory qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer with APEGA and authorization to practise engineering in Alberta.
- Approximately 7 or more years of relevant geotechnical consulting experience. Candidates with greater experience are encouraged to apply.
- Demonstrated experience managing geotechnical projects from proposal and investigation through analysis, reporting, and client presentation.
- Strong technical knowledge of soil and rock mechanics, site characterization, geotechnical investigation methods, and engineering analysis.
- Experience working directly with clients and the confidence to lead technical discussions, meetings, and presentations.
- Strong technical writing, proposal preparation, and report-review skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, budgets, and deadlines.
- A valid driver’s licence and the ability to travel to project sites.
Preferred experience
- Experience in one or more of the following sectors:
- Environmental and contaminated-site investigations
- Mining, mine infrastructure, tailings, or waste-rock facilities
- Oil and gas, pipelines, facilities, or other energy developments
- Civil infrastructure, land development, transportation, or municipal projects
- Experience integrating geotechnical investigations with geophysical survey results.
- Experience with slope stability, foundations, settlement, seepage, earthworks, excavations, ground improvement, or construction support.
- Familiarity with commonly used geotechnical analysis and modelling software.
- Experience supervising field investigations, drilling programs, test pits, instrumentation, or construction activities.
- An established professional network in Alberta or Western Canada.
- Experience mentoring junior technical staff or leading small project teams.
What will make you successful
You are a technically capable engineer who can see both the engineering details and the broader client objective. You are comfortable moving between fieldwork, analysis, reporting, project management, and client discussions.
You communicate clearly, exercise sound professional judgment, and take ownership of project outcomes. You value collaboration and are interested in using geotechnical engineering and geophysics together to provide clients with a more complete understanding of subsurface conditions.
