The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is Canada's largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital, as well as one of the world's leading research centres in the area of addiction and mental health. CAMH combines clinical care, research, education, policy development and health promotion to transform the lives of people affected by mental illness and addictions. CAMH’s Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute (CFMHRI) is home to scientists, staff and research trainees conducting research to improve the understanding of the brain and the causes and biomarkers of mental illness as well as making advances in prevention and treatment for mental illness and addictions across the lifespan.
The Centre for Youth Bipolar Disorder (CYBD) at CAMH is an internationally recognized leader in advancing research, clinical care, and knowledge translation focused on bipolar disorder in youth. CYBD’s mission is to improve early identification, prevention, and long-term outcomes for young people with, or at familial risk for, bipolar disorder. The Centre combines cutting-edge methodologies—including longitudinal cohort studies, neuroimaging, cardiovascular and genetic research, and patient-partnered approaches—to deepen understanding of mood disorders and associated risks.
Youth with bipolar disorder are at markedly increased risk for suicide, and the majority of these youth have a history of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. CYBD is committed to generating high-impact scientific discoveries that illuminate potential mechanisms underlying suicide risk among youth with bipolar disorder, including mechanisms that may be specific to youth and to bipolar disorder. A related goal is to translate this knowledge so that it informs evidence-based strategies that enhance emotion regulation and mitigate suicide risk in this population. Finally, we hope that this research will be destigmatizing for youth and their families.
CYBD is seeking an outstanding early career full-time, permanent scientist with expertise in suicide risk among youth with bipolar disorder. The successful candidate will have a track record of publications and international presentations focused on the neurobiology of suicide risk among youth with bipolar disorder. Additional research outputs focused on clinical characteristics associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors are also desirable. The successful applicant will establish and maintain a viable program of independent research focused on suicide risk in youth bipolar disorder. The research program must be capable of producing international-level scientific output, based on the key accountabilities listed below, and in alignment with the strategic objectives of the CYBD, the CFMHRI, and the hospital. They will work in a collaborative inter-disciplinary environment that contributes to the development of evidence-based practices to enhance mental health outcomes for patients, and support a workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork, and complies with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirement.
