Environmental Services Worker (ESW) - Full-Time/Part-Time/Casual - $18/hr
Hours: 12-hour Shifts | Days(8am-8pm) and Nights(8pm-8am)

Living Space is a low-barrier, non-profit emergency homelessness shelter offering 24/7 support for individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Lived experiences, culture, and perspectives are essential to fostering a healthy shelter environment for both staff and homeless community members on Treaty 9. Position Summary:
The Environmental Services Worker (ESW) is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, welcoming, and well-organized shelter environment. Working within a low-barrier, trauma-informed, and harm reduction framework, the ESW supports the daily operations of the shelter through housekeeping, laundry services, meal service, and general facility support.
The ESW contributes to the health, safety, and comfort of clients by ensuring shared spaces are clean, sanitary, and welcoming, and that meal service is delivered in a respectful and efficient manner. While the ESW interacts positively with clients and assists with routine requests related to the shelter environment, the primary focus of this role is operational and maintenance support rather than intensive client care.
Requirements:
· Ability to speak Cree, Ojibway or French will be considered a high-priority asset.
· PSW experience and/or experience working in shelters, healthcare, long-term care, or community services is an asset. Candidates with Lived-experience are encouraged to apply.
· High school diploma or equivalent.
· Food Handler Certification (or willingness to obtain).
· Experience or experience in housekeeping, environmental services, food service, hospitality, or institutional cleaning is preferred.
· Strong communication, observation, and relationship-building skills.
· Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check is required.
· Living Space has a Vaccination Policy that requires employees to take part in vaccination programs recommended by Public Health Unit.

Key Responsibilities:
Housekeeping and Environmental Services
· Clean and sanitize client areas, washrooms, common areas, offices, kitchens, dining areas, and staff spaces according to established cleaning schedules.
· Maintain high standards of cleanliness and infection prevention throughout the shelter.
· Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and disinfect designated areas.
· Maintain stocked supplies as-needed.
· Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces throughout each shift.
· Safely handle and dispose of waste, recycling, sharps containers, and biohazard materials in accordance with agency procedures.
· Report maintenance, repair, and safety concerns promptly.
Laundry Services
· Operate commercial washers and dryers.
· Wash, dry, fold, and organize linens, towels, blankets, and shelter-issued clothing.
· Change and prepare beds for new admissions.
· Maintain an adequate supply of clean linens and bedding.
Meal Service
· Set up dining areas before meal service.
· Serve meals, snacks, and beverages in a respectful and equitable manner.
· Clean and sanitize dining areas, dishes, utensils, and food service equipment following meal service.
· Maintain cleanliness of kitchen and dining spaces in accordance with food safety and infection prevention standards.
Client Interaction
· Greet clients respectfully and respond to routine requests related to meals, laundry, linens, and facility needs.
· Promote a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment.
· Observe and report safety concerns or client wellness concerns to the Charge Worker.
· Maintain professional boundaries while providing courteous client service.
Health and Safety
· Follow infection prevention and control practices.
· Use cleaning chemicals and equipment safely in accordance with WHMIS standards.
· Participate in emergency procedures, including evacuations and other safety protocols.
· Maintain a safe work environment by identifying and reporting hazards.
Documentation
· Complete cleaning schedules, laundry logs, and required environmental service records.
· Report equipment malfunctions and maintenance concerns.
· Document incidents in accordance with organizational procedures.
Scheduling: Extra available shifts are posted for Employees to select extra shifts they would like to work. Selected shifts are then approved/scheduled based on business needs. Casual Employees must be available to work a minimum of one shift bi-weekly, to a maximum of 44 hours per week. Part-Time Employees will be pre-scheduled up to 24 hours with the option to select extra shifts as needed. Full-Time Employees will receive a full schedule created in partnership with the Operations Team.
