Summer Student – Shelter Assistant - Pembina Valley Humane Society
The Pembina Valley Humane Society (PVHS) is an animal shelter located in Morden, Manitoba, serving more than 40 communities throughout the Pembina Valley. For over 20 years, PVHS has been dedicated to rescuing stray and unwanted animals, promoting the humane treatment of companion animals through education, and providing valuable programs and services throughout the region.

Position Details
Approximate Employment Period: Late June to late August 2026
Contract Duration: Approximately 5–9 weeks, depending on the approved funding allocation and assigned schedule.
Schedule: Hours and schedule will be determined by the Pembina Valley Humane Society based on operational needs. The position will typically consist of 4–5 days per week, with shifts ranging from 6–7 hours per day. Most or all Saturdays are required, and occasional evening shifts may be necessary.
Please note that work schedules may vary throughout the employment term based on shelter operations, events, staffing needs, and program requirements.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide excellent customer service by answering phone calls, responding to emails, assisting walk-in visitors, and processing payments.
- Conduct adoption and foster follow-up communications.
- Assist with paperwork, documentation, and record keeping as directed by shelter staff.
- Support meet-and-greets, adoptions, owner surrenders, veterinary documentation, and other administrative tasks.
- Assist with donation pickups, drop-offs, organization, and other general errands as required.
- Perform cleaning, organizing, and general shelter support duties.
- Assist with animal care tasks as needed.
- Support the planning, promotion, and delivery of shelter events, fundraisers, and community engagement initiatives.
- Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers to promote the mission and values of the Pembina Valley Humane Society.
- Provide vacation relief coverage and assist with maintaining daily shelter operations during staff absences.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of shelter operations.
Skills & Qualifications
- Interest in animal welfare; experience with animal care, handling, or behaviour is considered an asset.
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Friendly, confident, and outgoing personality.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
Eligibility Requirements
This position is funded through the Urban/Hometown Greenteam Grant . Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of employment.
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with applicable provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Pay: $16.00 per hour
