Position Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Master (Tugboat) for vessels up to 150 GT. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of tugboats, ensuring the safe maneuvering of ships and cargo in various maritime environments. The Master maintains operational control of the vessel while delivering high standards of customer service, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure vessel operations comply with Hodder's HSEQ policies, Safety Management System, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain operational control of the tug and tow in all aspects of barge and log towing operations, including tidal waters and freshet conditions.
- Lead, supervise, mentor, and develop crew members while promoting a strong safety culture.
- Manage the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the vessel and associated equipment.
- Maintain effective communication with shore-based personnel to optimize operational efficiency and safety.
- Ensure compliance with applicable Transport Canada regulations, Port Authority requirements, and Collision Regulations.
- Conduct voyage planning and ensure safe navigation in all operating areas.
- Maintain vessel machinery, navigation electronics, and operational readiness.
- Promote customer service excellence and maintain positive working relationships with customers, crews, and stakeholders.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
Required
- Minimum Master 150 GT Domestic Certificate of Competency.
- Valid Transport Canada Marine Medical Certificate.
- Marine Advanced First Aid (preferred) or Marine Basic First Aid.
- Valid Canadian passport.
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence and access to a personal vehicle.
- Ability to satisfy pre-employment Drug and Alcohol testing requirements.
- Satisfactory criminal record check.
- Minimum 3–5 years of verified sea service involving barge and log towing operations.
- Demonstrated experience operating twin-screw tugboats.
- Experience working in tidal waters and Fraser River operations.
- Thorough knowledge of local tides and navigation on the Fraser River, including North Arm and Main Arm operations.
- Familiarity with Fraser River bridge transit restrictions between Marpole and Mission.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Collision Regulations and applicable Canadian maritime legislation.
- Experience operating in Vancouver Harbour and coastal areas including Howe Sound, Squamish, Port Moody, Crofton, Nanaimo, Powell River, Comox, Campbell River, and Esquimalt.
- Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, and supervisory skills.
- Excellent vessel handling abilities and demonstrated commitment to safe operations.
Preferred
- Experience handling tandem barge tows utilizing couplers and deep-sea gear.
- Familiarity with local tie-up locations and terminals.
- Experience towing logs and barges during freshet conditions.
- Experience operating on the West Coast of Vancouver Island.
- Experience in Northern British Columbia operations, including Kitimat, Prince Rupert, and Haida Gwaii.
- Experience operating in U.S. waters, including Seattle, Tacoma, Port Angeles, Astoria, and Aberdeen.
- Knowledge and experience maintaining vessel machinery and navigation systems.
- Proven record of safe tug and barge operations.
Working Conditions
- Shift schedules and rotations are governed by the Collective Agreement and operational requirements.
- Employees may be required to remain available for work when not achieving target hours.
- Work is performed outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
- Position may require handling heavy lines, wire bridles, deck winches, and anchor winches.
- Schedule rotations are subject to operational requirements.
Compensation and Benefits
Employees are hired under the applicable Collective Agreement with the Canadian Merchant Service Guild (CMSG).
