About Bio-Test Laboratory
Bio-Test Laboratory is a growing, privately held diagnostic laboratory network serving Ottawa and Eastern Ontario through 11 patient service centres. For decades, physicians and patients across the region have trusted us for accurate, timely diagnostic testing. Today, we're in the middle of an exciting transformation — modernizing our operations, digitizing our workflows, and embracing AI-enabled tools to deliver a faster, smarter, more connected diagnostic experience.
We're looking for a leader who wants to be part of that transformation — not just to run our specimen processing and client services operations, but to help bring them to the next level.
The Opportunity
This is a hands-on operational leadership role with real room to grow. You'll own the engine room of the lab: the specimen processing and client services functions that ensure every sample moves from collection to accurate, on-time diagnostic reporting. But this isn't a "keep the lights on" job. We're hiring someone who will challenge how things are done, bring digital fluency to a traditionally manual environment, and help build the modern lab operation we're becoming.
For the right candidate, this role is a launchpad. As Bio-Test grows and modernizes, so will the scope of this position — into broader operations leadership, digital transformation initiatives, and strategic projects across the network.
What You'll Do
Operational Leadership
· Oversee all operational aspects of specimen processing and client services, ensuring timely and accurate diagnostic reporting across the network
· Lead, supervise, coach, and develop the specimen processing and client services teams, building a culture of accountability, adaptability, and continuous improvement
· Own daily workflow management — anticipating bottlenecks, reallocating resources, and staying nimble as volumes and priorities shift
Performance & Continuous Improvement
· Set, monitor, and achieve KPI targets across productivity, turnaround time, quality, and client experience
· Use data and dashboards — not gut feel — to identify trends, diagnose problems, and drive improvement initiatives
· Champion a "better every week" mindset: pilot changes quickly, measure results, scale what works
Digital & AI Enablement
· Identify, evaluate, and implement new technologies that streamline operations — from workflow automation to digital requisitioning and reporting tools
· Apply AI tools at a moderate-to-advanced level in day-to-day work: drafting SOPs and communications, analyzing operational data, automating repetitive tasks, and improving decision-making
· Act as a digital champion for your teams — training staff, reducing resistance to change, and translating new tools into real productivity gains
· Partner with leadership on modernization initiatives across the lab network
Client Experience
· Ensure client services delivers responsive, professional support to physicians, clinics, and patients
· Close the loop on service issues quickly, and use complaint and feedback data to drive systemic fixes
What You Bring
· 3–5+ years of supervisory or management experience in laboratory operations, specimen processing, healthcare operations, or a comparable high-volume, quality-critical environment
· Demonstrated digital fluency: comfortable adopting new software quickly, working with data (Excel/dashboards at minimum; analytics tools a plus), and using AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot) in a professional context
· A track record of process improvement — you can point to something you made measurably faster, cheaper, or better
· Strong people leadership: you develop teams, handle difficult conversations directly, and bring staff along through change
· Adaptability and calm under pressure — lab operations shift daily, and you adjust without drama
· Excellent communication skills with clinical staff, clients, and leadership
· Knowledge of laboratory accreditation and quality standards (e.g., IQMH/Accreditation Canada Diagnostics) is a strong asset
· MLT/MLA background or healthcare credentials are an asset, not a requirement — we care more about how you lead and how you think
Hours of Work
Monday to Friday. Standard hours are 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, with flexibility to work 12:00 PM – 8:30 PM as staffing needs require. This role requires the operational agility to adjust to the needs of the lab.
