KB RACKING is a leading solar company specializing in the development, design, and manufacture of commercial PV mounting solutions for rooftops across North America. Since 2010, we’ve supported over 150 MW of clean energy across 600+ projects in the U.S. and Canada.
We are growing quickly and building the internal systems that allow us to scale engineering, reduce turnaround times, and support customers across multiple jurisdictions.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Design Engineer is a high-impact systems role focused on engineering workflow optimization, design validation, and technical coordination. This is not a drafting-only position. You will build and improve the tools, logic, and processes that power our design department.
You will interface directly with our internal design team and our India-based design partners to coordinate drawing completion, validate engineering accuracy, and improve turnaround time. You will be responsible for strengthening automation within AutoCAD, Excel, and internal engineering tools to improve productivity and design reliability.
CORE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Design Coordination & Engineering Validation
· Prepare solar panel designs & engineering reports in AutoCAD and Excel.
· Coordinate design task flow between Toronto HQ and external design team.
· Review and validate preliminary rooftop solar layouts before submission to Sales.
· Identify structural, mechanical, or logical inconsistencies and recommend improvements.
· Ensure all deliverables meet internal engineering standards and defined KPIs.
· Maintain predictable design turnaround timelines and improve throughput metrics.
Structural Loads & Wind Engineering
· Work with partners such as RWDI to interpret wind tunnel testing results.
· Apply pressure zones, coefficients, and loading requirements correctly.
· Translate testing data into practical design rules and system logic
Engineering Calculations & System Logic
· Own and validate ballast calculations, load distribution, and structural assumptions
· Maintain consistency across Excel tools, AutoCAD outputs, and internal platforms
· Identify gaps or risks in engineering logic and proactively resolve them
Design Systems & Tools
· Support and improve AutoCAD workflows and design templates
· Work with software developers to translate engineering logic into tools
· Validate outputs and troubleshoot discrepancies between systems
Design Execution & QA
· Support the design board by reviewing incoming requests for technical accuracy
· Ensure deliverables meet engineering and code standards before release
· Identify recurring issues and improve design efficiency
IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE
We are seeking a structured, analytical thinker who enjoys building systems and improving logic-driven processes.
You are likely someone who:
· Thinks in systems and enjoys optimizing workflows.
· Has strong mathematical reasoning and advanced Excel capability.
· Enjoys solving inefficiencies through automation and scripting.
· Takes ownership of technical outcomes rather than simply executing tasks.
· Is interested in long-term growth within engineering, automation, or technical leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline.
· 1–3 years of experience in design engineering, CAD automation, or technical systems roles.
· Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD (2018 or newer) or BricsCAD (V25 or newer).
· Proficiency in SolidWorks is an asset.
· Working knowledge of AutoLISP or at least one high-level programming language(Python, VBA, C#, etc.) is an asset.
· Advanced Excel skills (formulas, logic structuring, data modeling).
· Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural drawings.
· Experience with solar PV or structural steel systems is an asset but not required.
· Familiarity with wind tunnel testing (RWDI or similar) is an asset.
GROWTH PATH & CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
This role is designed as a long-term engineering growth position. High performers will gain increasing ownership over engineering systems and automation architecture.
Potential progression paths include a Senior Design Engineer and Engineering Systems Lead for instance. We invest in individuals who demonstrate ownership, technical excellence, and long-term commitment.
COMPENSATION & LOCATION
· Salary Range: $50,000 – $60,000 CAD (based on experience)
· Performance-based bonus opportunities
· Comprehensive health, dental, and medical benefits
· Progressive vacation plan
· Educational reimbursement support
· Hybrid work flexibility (Toronto HQ – Liberty Village)
