We're looking for a hands-on Shopify specialist who can do the work and own the store end to end, engaged as an independent contractor. This is a hybrid role: part developer, part store manager. You'll write the code (Liquid theme work, app integrations, tracking) and run the storefront like a product, managing the development pipeline, prioritizing a steady flow of landing pages and campaigns, keeping integrations healthy, and coordinating with the brand's designers, growth team, and CTO so work ships on time without anyone losing technical control. Shopify is the center of gravity here, so it's a strong fit for someone who lives in the platform day to day rather than treating it as one tool among many.
Engagement terms
This is a contract role. You operate as an independent contractor responsible for tracking your own hours and submitting invoices to Variable Lift on a monthly basis for payment. You set your own schedule and work method provided deliverables ship on time; there's no expectation of fixed hours or availability windows beyond what's needed to hit deadlines and stay responsive to the team.
What you'll do
Theme & front-end development
- Own and maintain the existing custom Shopify theme, building and editing sections and
blocks in Liquid, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Produce landing pages, product pages, and campaign pages on a regular cadence.
Paid-social funnels mean the brand often needs a batch of landers turned around, so
comfort with volume helps.
- Keep the storefront fast, clean, and focused on conversion.Build a real development pipeline
- Set up the engineering hygiene that isn't in place yet: get the existing theme under
version control (Git), stand up staging and preview environments, use the Shopify CLI,
and establish a safe deploy workflow so changes don't go straight to production.
App ecosystem & integrations
- Manage and integrate the app stack: subscriptions (Recharge), post-purchase upsells
(AfterSell), bundle builders, and product quiz / recommendation / AI-personalization
experiences.
- Handle app migrations and theme cleanup, like cleanly pulling a deprecated subscription
app out of the theme and integrating its replacement without breaking the storefront.
Checkout & payments
- Work across Shopify Payments plus funnel transactions that run through Stripe and push
to Shopify for fulfillment, and help integrate and test backup processors (Authorize.Net,
PayFacto) for redundancy.
- Implement checkout customizations and make sure the full purchase path, including
one-page checkout flows, works reliably.
Analytics & tracking
- Implement and maintain GA4, Google Tag Manager, and the Meta / TikTok pixels,
conversion events, and data feeds that attribution tools like Triple Whale and Northbeam
rely on. Since the business runs on paid acquisition, accurate tracking directly affects
how well the ad spend performs.
Multi-channel & store management
- Support the connective tissue between Lander Labs landing pages, the Shopify store,
and the Meta / TikTok Shop funnels, and help coordinate the move from Amazon to a
dedicated 3PL for fulfillment.
- Run the store day to day: triage and manage tickets in ClickUp, take design handoffs
from Figma, prioritize the backlog, communicate status proactively, and keep
stakeholders in the loop.
What you bring (required)
- 3 to 5+ years hands-on Shopify development, ideally including Shopify Plus.
- Strong Liquid and front-end fundamentals (semantic HTML, CSS, vanilla JavaScript),
comfortable architecting theme sections and blocks.- Experience with the Shopify app ecosystem and integrations: subscriptions (Recharge or
similar), upsell / post-purchase apps, page and bundle builders.
- A solid Git-based workflow and good habits around staging, review, and safe deploys.
- Comfort working with AI workflows and automation. You use AI coding assistants
(Cursor, Copilot, Claude, and the like) to produce landing pages and theme sections at
the cadence paid social demands, and you reach for automation to handle the repetitive
parts of store operations rather than doing them by hand. A large share of the volume
work here is exactly the kind these tools accelerate well, so using them fluently is central
to keeping pace — not a bonus.
- Working knowledge of e-commerce analytics: GA4, GTM, conversion pixels, and event
tracking.
- Proactive communication and the ability to self-direct in a lean, fast-moving,
contractor-driven setup where priorities shift.
Nice to have
- DTC / CPG / supplements or other regulated-product e-commerce experience.
- Experience producing landing pages at scale for paid social.
- Experience building automations and integrations between tools (n8n, Zapier, Make, or
custom scripts) — for example, syncing data across the funnel, store, and attribution
stack, or automating routine reporting and store-ops tasks.
- Checkout extensibility / Shopify Functions, custom apps, or headless / Hydrogen
experience.
- Familiarity with payment gateway integrations (Stripe, Authorize.Net, PayFacto) and
reconciliation across channels.
- Comfort working alongside BI / analytics workflows, with an eye toward an eventual
platform migration as the business scales.
How we work
Small, senior, distributed team. You'll have a lot of autonomy and direct access to
decision-makers. We lean on AI-augmented workflows to stay fast and lean, and we expect
whoever owns the store to work the same way. In exchange for the autonomy, we count on you to keep your work tracked, your timelines realistic, and your communication early when something looks off course. People who raise issues before they grow do well here.
