Job Summary
As a Heavy Equipment Operator, you will be a key member of our Pipe Yard Operations team, responsible for the safe and efficient handling, storage, and movement of steel pipe and related materials. This role involves operating heavy equipment to load and unload inbound and outbound shipments, maintaining accurate inventory records, and ensuring customer orders are prepared and shipped accurately and on schedule.
Working closely with the Operations and Logistics teams, you will coordinate daily yard activities, communicate with freight carriers, and contribute to the safe, organized, and efficient operation of the yard. The successful candidate is self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining a strong commitment to safety and customer service.
This position is scheduled Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a minimum of 40 hours per week. Occasional overtime may be required based on operational needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct daily pre-operational inspections of assigned equipment and the work area before each shift and complete required inspection documentation.
- Safely operate heavy equipment, including loaders, or other material handling equipment, to unload, move, store, and load steel pipe and related materials.
- Load and unload trucks in a safe, efficient, and damage-free manner while following established loading procedures.
- Verify incoming and outgoing shipments by accurately tallying and recording materials entering and leaving the yard.
- Maintain accurate inventory records and assist with inventory counts, cycle counts, and inventory reconciliation activities.
- Pick, stage, and prepare customer orders, ensuring all sales orders are accurate, complete, and shipped on time.
- Coordinate daily shipping and receiving activities with the Operations and Logistics teams to ensure efficient workflow.
- Communicate effectively with freight carriers, drivers, and internal team members regarding shipment schedules, loading requirements, and delivery priorities.
- Organize and maintain the pipe yard to maximize safety, accessibility, and operational efficiency.
- Perform routine daily maintenance, cleaning, and refueling of assigned equipment, reporting any maintenance or repair requirements promptly.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while adhering to all company safety policies, procedures, and environmental standards.
- Report inventory discrepancies, equipment issues, safety concerns, or operational challenges to the appropriate supervisor.
- Support other warehouse, yard, or operational activities as required.
Qualifications
- Previous experience operating heavy equipment in a pipe yard, steel service centre, warehouse, construction, or industrial environment.
- Experience operating wheel loaders, material handlers, or similar equipment is preferred.
- Strong understanding of safe material handling practices for steel pipe and oversized products.
- Experience with inventory control, shipping and receiving, and order fulfillment.
- Ability to accurately read shipping documents, sales orders, packing lists, and inventory records.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills with the ability to coordinate with operations personnel and freight carriers.
- Mechanical aptitude and the ability to perform routine equipment inspections and basic maintenance.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.

Working Conditions
- Outdoor pipe yard and industrial work environment.
- Regular exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, dust, and moving equipment.
- Frequent operation of heavy equipment and handling of large, heavy steel pipe and materials.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required at all times while on site.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, and perform physical duties throughout the workday.
Pay: $30.00-$35.00 per hour
