Position Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Mate (Tugboat) for vessels up to 500 GT. If you’re an experienced Mate who’s interested in joining a great team, joining Hodder could be for you!
Key Responsibilities
- Reporting to the Master and being responsible for duties of Watchkeeping Mate.
- Familiarity with the Master's responsibilities and duties in the event he/she is required to assume command.
- Taking charge of a navigation watch.
- Supervising dredging operations and optimizing production and the continuity of the vessel.
- Instructing crew in all aspects of their work.
- Ensuring that the vessel is clean and necessary maintenance is carried out.
- Ensuring the deck equipment is properly maintained.
- Inspecting, caring for and maintaining the lifesaving and firefighting equipment.
- Initiating orders for deck stores, as required.
- Inputting/updating information into electronic maintenance management system.
Qualifications and Experience
Required
- Must have a minimum Chief Mate 500 GT, Domestic Certificate of Competency
- 3 to 5 years of sea service on a Coastal Tug, with prior Mate experience
- Transport Canada Marine Medical Certificate
- Basic Marine First Aid or Marine Advanced First Aid
- Basic tug/barge handling skills including tandem towing experience
- Knowledge of Fraser River, Bridge transits, and Coastal Navigation.
- Excellent supervisory and leadership ability, with strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to meet Pre-Employment Drug & Alcohol testing requirements
- Clean criminal record check.
- Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, and supervisory skills.
Preferred
- Experience handling tandem barge tows utilizing couplers and deep-sea gear.
- Experience operating on the West Coast of Vancouver Island.
- Experience in Northern British Columbia operations, including Kitimat, Prince Rupert, and Haida Gwaii.
- Experience operating in U.S. waters, including Seattle, Tacoma, Port Angeles, Astoria, and Aberdeen.
- Knowledge and experience maintaining vessel machinery and navigation systems.
Working Conditions
- Shift schedules and rotations are governed by the Collective Agreement and operational requirements.
- Work is performed outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
- Position may require handling heavy lines, wire bridles, deck winches, and anchor winches.
- Schedule rotations are subject to operational requirements.
Compensation and Benefits
Employees are hired under the applicable Collective Agreement with the Canadian Merchant Service Guild (CMSG).
