About PigRun Solutions
PigRun Solutions is a Canadian technology company developing advanced tracking and monitoring systems for the oil and gas pipeline industry.
Our products combine embedded electronics, industrial sensors, wireless communications, satellite connectivity, GPS, data acquisition, and cloud-based monitoring. Our systems are deployed in demanding field environments across Canada, the United States, and international markets.
We are looking for a Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer to take ownership of the firmware used across our current and next-generation products.
The Role
The Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining firmware for PigRun’s battery-powered tracking and sensor systems.
You will work on embedded platforms that interface with magnetic sensors, geophones, accelerometers, GPS receivers, cellular modems, satellite modules, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, displays, SD cards, and other peripherals.
This is a hands-on development role for someone who is comfortable owning firmware from initial architecture through testing, deployment, troubleshooting, and long-term maintenance.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded firmware using C and C++.
- Develop firmware for STM32, Nordic, and similar microcontroller platforms.
- Create and maintain device drivers for sensors, communication modules, displays, storage devices, and other peripherals.
- Develop reliable data-acquisition and sensor-sampling systems.
- Implement communication interfaces using Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular, satellite, USB, UART, SPI, and I²C.
- Develop firmware for local and remote device configuration, monitoring, diagnostics, and firmware updates.
- Implement reliable SD-card data logging, file management, buffering, and data-recovery mechanisms.
- Optimize firmware for low-power operation and extended battery life.
- Troubleshoot communication failures, memory issues, timing problems, sensor noise, and field-related firmware issues.
- Support the development of real-time data streaming and remote monitoring features.
- Improve firmware reliability under poor connectivity, unexpected shutdowns, low battery conditions, and harsh field environments.
- Develop automated tests, production test firmware, diagnostic tools, and engineering utilities.
- Participate in firmware architecture, code reviews, documentation, and release management.
- Work closely with hardware, software, mechanical, production, and field-operations teams.
- Support field testing and investigate issues reported from real-world deployments.
- Help establish strong coding standards, documentation practices, and firmware development processes.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- At least eight years of professional embedded firmware development experience.
- Strong experience programming embedded systems in C and C++.
- Experience developing firmware for STM32, Nordic, or comparable ARM-based microcontrollers.
- Experience with real-time operating systems such as FreeRTOS.
- Strong understanding of interrupts, timers, DMA, memory management, concurrency, and real-time system behaviour.
- Experience developing and debugging embedded communication protocols.
- Experience working with UART, SPI, I²C, USB, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi.
- Experience with battery-powered and low-power embedded products.
- Experience using embedded debugging tools, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and hardware programmers.
- Ability to read schematics and work closely with PCB and hardware engineers.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to independently take ownership of complex firmware projects.
- Strong technical documentation and communication skills.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
- Knowledge of digital signal processing.
- Experience with sensor signal filtering, FFTs, spectral analysis, noise reduction, or event detection.
- Experience working with magnetic sensors, geophones, accelerometers, or other industrial sensors.
- Experience with cellular IoT technologies such as LTE-M, NB-IoT, or CAT-1.
- Experience integrating satellite communication modules.
- Experience with GPS, GNSS, PPS timing, and real-time clocks.
- Experience developing firmware for displays or graphical user interfaces.
- Experience with bootloaders, over-the-air firmware updates, and secure firmware deployment.
- Experience with SD cards, FAT file systems, high-volume data logging, or data-corruption recovery.
- Familiarity with Python or other scripting languages for testing and engineering tools.
- Experience developing rugged industrial, automotive, aerospace, medical, or oil and gas equipment.
- Knowledge of electromagnetic interference, grounding, shielding, and sensor-noise troubleshooting.
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who:
- Takes ownership and follows problems through to a complete solution.
- Is comfortable working in a fast-moving product-development environment.
- Enjoys solving difficult hardware and firmware integration problems.
- Can balance rapid development with long-term reliability and maintainability.
- Is willing to test products in the laboratory and under real field conditions.
- Communicates clearly and documents their work so that knowledge is shared across the team.
- Is excited about helping build products that are deployed and relied upon around the world.
Why Join PigRun Solutions?
- Work directly on innovative products used in real pipeline operations.
- Take ownership of important firmware architecture and product decisions.
- Work with sensing, wireless communication, satellite connectivity, embedded systems, and cloud-connected devices.
- Participate in the development of both existing products and entirely new product platforms.
- Join a growing Canadian technology company where your work will have a visible and meaningful impact.
- Opportunity for professional growth as the engineering team and product portfolio expand.
Experience with complete products—from prototype development through production and field deployment—will be considered a strong asset.
