Fortran Steel Contracting is a leading structural steel and miscellaneous metals fabrication company committed to delivering high-quality projects across commercial, industrial, and institutional sectors. We are seeking an experienced Senior Estimator to lead our estimating department and play a key role in securing profitable projects while supporting the continued growth of our organization.
Position Summary
The Senior Estimator is responsible for leading the estimating process from initial bid review through final submission. This role requires extensive knowledge of structural steel fabrication, miscellaneous metals, project planning, and construction practices. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with management, project managers, detailing, production, and clients to develop competitive, accurate, and profitable bids while mentoring junior estimating staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the preparation of complete and competitive tenders for structural steel and miscellaneous metals projects.
- Review contract drawings, specifications, and bid documents to determine the complete scope of work.
- Prepare detailed and accurate quantity take-offs, material estimates, labour calculations, and costing.
- Analyze project risks, identify scope gaps, and recommend value engineering opportunities where appropriate.
- Solicit, evaluate, and negotiate pricing from suppliers and subcontractors.
- Develop accurate budgets and pricing strategies that align with company objectives.
- Monitor addenda, design revisions, and project changes throughout the bidding process.
- Coordinate and lead bid review meetings with senior management.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with general contractors, consultants, suppliers, and clients.
- Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client meetings as required.
- Provide estimating support during project handoff to the Project Management team.
- Mentor and provide guidance to Junior Estimators while promoting estimating best practices.
- Continuously improve estimating procedures, databases, and costing systems.
- Assist with business development opportunities and respond to Requests for Quotation (RFQs).
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Skills
- Extensive knowledge of structural steel fabrication, miscellaneous metals, and construction practices.
- Ability to accurately interpret structural, architectural, and engineering drawings and specifications.
- Strong understanding of steel fabrication processes, erection methods, and installation sequencing.
- Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards including OBC, CISC, CWB, CSA, and related industry specifications.
- Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent negotiation and communication abilities.
- Proven ability to manage multiple tenders and meet strict deadlines.
- Strong leadership skills with experience mentoring and developing team members.
- High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word, Teams).
- Experience with estimating software and ERP systems is considered an asset.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently or within a collaborative team environment.
- Valid Ontario Driver’s License.
- Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.
Experience
- Minimum 7–10 years of estimating experience in structural steel fabrication and miscellaneous metals.
- Demonstrated success estimating commercial, industrial, and institutional steel projects.
- Previous experience leading complex bids and mentoring estimating teams is preferred.
- Experience in project management or operations is considered an asset.
Education
- Civil Engineering Technician/Technologist Diploma, Engineering Degree, Construction Management, or equivalent industry experience.
- Professional designations or additional industry certifications are considered an asset.
Language
- Fluent in English (spoken and written).
- French is considered an asset.
