The Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society (VAFCS) is a non-profit charitable organization serving the Urban Aboriginal community with a mandate to provide programs and services that will contribute to the cultural, educational, social, economic, and recreational development of Urban Aboriginal people.
The HR Assistant is a part-time (7.5 hours/day x 3 days/week) contract position. The position is responsible for providing support to the HR team such as recruiting, reference checks, onboarding, creating and editing job descriptions, participating in developing training plans, etc.
Role Responsibilities
- Coordinates administrative tasks related to HR processes, including maintaining records, updating databases/systems and managing documentation.
- Onboards new staff
- Assists with recruitment by creating and posting jobs, sourcing, screening, conducting telephone interviews and coordinating candidate communication, extending job offers.
- Supports the development and implementation of HR policies and procedures by conducting research, drafting documents, templates, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
- Creating and editing job descriptions
- Follows up on Criminal Record Checks
- Audit records periodically to ensure compliance
- Participates in planning training
- Participates in digitizing employee files

- Answers enquiries
- Participates in health and safety
- Coordinates benefits
- Coordinates meetings and events related to HR activities, including scheduling, preparing agendas, and documenting minutes.
- Supports social media activities.
- Provides general support to HR team as needed.
- Assists with project management.
- Performs other related duties.
Qualifications
- Experience working with Indigenous persons and a familiarity surrounding Indigenous culture.
- Completion of a post-secondary certificate or diploma in Human Resources is an asset
- One (1) year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict
- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
- Experience coordinating training or educational programs.
- Efficient time management and decision-making skills
- Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint); familiarity with the HR systems is an asset.
- Basic understanding of HR processes such as onboarding, recruitment, and job description
