The sessional instructor will prepare, teach and grade assignments associated with Environmental Informatics (ENVI 5507) during the Fall 2026 term. This course is offered to approximately 45 students with varying degrees of prior exposure to environmental informatics tools and techniques. Students are drawn primarily from the course-based Master of Resource and Environmental Management program although other graduate students may also take the course with permission. The course involves both lecture and computer lab-based learning and is offered through a 1.5-hour lecture per week (currently scheduled Fridays 2:30-4) and two 1.5 hour tutorial sections (currently scheduled for Mondays 11:30-1, and 1 to 2:30; each supported by a TA to assist with demonstration and, depending on their experience, some marking). The sessional instructor can play a role in TA selection.
Course description:
Environmental informatics refers to digital systems for environmental monitoring, analysis, communication and decision-making. The course will cover: digital data and where to find it; how to access such data ethically and manage it intelligently; tools and techniques necessary for making best use of those data; and a working knowledge of a subset of those datasets, tools and techniques, including census, spreadsheets, database management systems and geographic information systems.
There is a well-developed syllabus, set of course materials and assignments in place for this course. The instructor will ideally follow these materials though some deviation to accommodate the instructor’s knowledge and skills is acceptable.
