Steel Reef is a Canadian company that gathers and redistributes potentially wasted gas to deliver the energy that powers our lives.
From our Saskatchewan roots, we have grown into a dominant player in flare gas capture, contributing to the energy transition through coal-to-gas switching to power homes, communities and industries dedicated to reducing emissions and powering potential.
Since our inception in 2012, Steel Reef has supported the energy community in capturing wasted energy, processing and distributing associated natural gas and other products, and bringing in net new energy production and distribution for homes, communities and businesses.
Focusing our efforts within the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin and Bakken Resource Play, Steel Reef has become a market leader in developing the emissions-to-energy practice to supply net new energy from flare gas, a previously unavailable source.
In 2024, Steel Reef entered into multiple long-term Power Purchase Agreements with SaskPower. Following construction of additional utility-grade electricity substations and generation turbines powered by recovered flare gas, Steel Reef will provide more than 100 megawatts (MW) of electricity within Saskatchewan and North Dakota, which could power more than 100,000 homes annually.

Operational Technology (OT) Technician – Field Based
Position Summary
The Intermediate Operational Technology (OT) Technician is responsible for the field support, maintenance, and troubleshooting of industrial control systems across multiple operational facilities. This role supports PLC, SCADA, and DCS environments and works closely with operations, maintenance, automation, and IT teams to ensure reliable, safe, and secure operation of OT systems.
This position requires a self motivated individual capable of working independently in remote and industrial environments while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and documentation. This position reports into the Team Lead, Operational Technology. It is a field based position based in Lampman, SK requiring regular travel to company facilities across Southeast Saskatchewan.
Key Responsibilities

Provide field based technical support for OT systems, including PLC, SCADA, and DCS platforms
Troubleshoot, maintain, and modify control system hardware, software, and communications
Support commissioning, configuration, and startup activities for new and existing facilities
Diagnose and resolve control system, networking, and instrumentation issues
Perform system backups, restores, and version control in accordance with company standards
Support alarm management, logic troubleshooting, and control system optimization
Work independently at remote sites to manage tasks, prioritize work, and resolve issues efficiently
Collaborate with internal teams, vendors, and contractors during maintenance and project work
Ensure OT systems comply with internal standards, cybersecurity requirements, and safety policies
Maintain accurate technical documentation and change records
Participate in after hours, on call, or emergency support as required
Travel regularly to Canadian facilities and occasionally to U.S. facilities in North Dakota

Industrial Communications & Telemetry

Licensed and unlicensed radio systems (including Microhard radios)
Cellular and industrial networking devices (including Digi products)
MQTT based data communications (including Cirrus)
Serial and Ethernet communications for OT and telemetry systems (RTUs, DAQ)
Troubleshooting of radio paths, signal strength, latency, and data reliability

Core Technical Skills

PLC programming, online troubleshooting, and diagnostics
SCADA system configuration and support
DCS operations and basic configuration changes
Industrial communications and networking fundamentals
Control system backup, restore, and lifecycle management
Field device and I/O troubleshooting
Familiarity with troubleshooting gas turbines

Required Qualifications

3 to 7 years of experience in operational technology, automation, or industrial controls
Post secondary education in Automation, Instrumentation, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
Demonstrated ability to work independently in a field based role with minimal supervision
Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem solving skills
Effective written and verbal communication skills
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel extensively
Eligibility to travel to and work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications

Experience supporting oil and gas, energy, or industrial production facilities, particularly, gas plants, gas gathering systems, power generation, TMS and compressor stations.
Familiarity with OT cybersecurity principles and standards
Experience working in remote or unmanned facilities
Previous cross border work experience (Canada / United States)

Working Conditions

Field based role with frequent travel
Work performed in industrial plant and remote site environments
Occasional after hours, weekend, or emergency response work required
