The opportunity
Tata Steel Minerals Canada is currently seeking Heavy Equipment Technicians/Heavy Duty Mechanics to join the Maintenance & Essential Services team to work on a Fly-in/Fly-out basis of 2 weeks On/Off to and from the Menihek region in Labrador, near the town of Schefferville, QC. Operations at our mine site are running 24/7 all year long. Standard work schedules are of 12 hours per day.
The main pick-up points are St. John’s, Gander, Deer Lake, Happy Valley-Goose Bay in NL, Halifax, NS, Moncton, NB, and Montreal, QC.
Reporting to the Supervisor of Essential Services, the incumbent will be responsible to diagnose, repair, adjust, overhaul, maintain, and test Diesel Engine Equipment, Small Mobile Equipment and Light Vehicles, while actively working to identify opportunities for improvement.
Responsibilities

Diagnose, repair, and maintain Caterpillar diesel engines and associated systems.

Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair hydraulic systems and components.

Maintain and repair mobile construction equipment (e.g., skid steers, loaders, excavators).

Service and repair heavy support trucks, including fuel trucks and vacuum trucks.

Perform automotive repairs and maintenance on light vehicles and small equipment.

Use diagnostic software, test results, error codes, and operator feedback to identify and resolve equipment issues.

Execute preventive and predictive maintenance programs to minimize equipment downtime.

Operate service trucks and complete field repairs safely and efficiently.

Support shutdown and turnaround maintenance activities when required.

Accurately document work performed in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

Work collaboratively with operators, supervisors, and other maintenance personnel.
Required Experience
-
Journeyperson Heavy Duty Mechanic or Automotive Mechanic with valid Interprovincial Red Seal certification.

Minimum 3 years of relevant experience (mining, construction, or heavy industry preferred).

Proven experience with diesel engines and hydraulic systems.

Experience with light mobile equipment and service truck operation considered an asset.

Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, manuals, and use diagnostic software.

Proficient computer skills; experience with CMMS preferred.

Self-motivated with the ability to work independently or within a team.

Ability to work on site under a fly-in/fly-out schedule

Certification or experience operating mobile equipment such as vacuum trucks, skid steers, mini excavators, loaders, telehandler, etc.

Fire training or First Responder certification.

Cross-trade experience or additional certifications (e.g., Welder, Millwright, pipe fitter) are considered strong assets and are actively encouraged.
