APHASIA CENTRE OF OTTAWA

Communicative Disorders Assistant

(Bilingual English/French preferred)

JOB DESCRIPTION

Who we are

The Aphasia Centre of Ottawa is a non-profit community organization providing on-going support to adult individuals and families living with the chronic disability of aphasia. ACO is dedicated to facilitating the inclusion of people with aphasia in family and community life by bridging the communication gap. ACO’s clinical environment is highly experienced and inter-disciplinary; a group of accomplished Speech Language Pathologists, Social Workers, and Communicative Disorders Assistants, working together to deliver services to the aphasia community in Eastern- Ontario.

Job Type: Full-time, contract (1.0 FTE) (1 year contract position, potential to renew)

Hours per week: 35 hours per week-may vary

Location: Hybrid (in office and online)

Years of experience: 3-5 years

Salary & Compensation: $28-32 hourly, opportunities for professional development, flexible work schedule

Responsibilities

· Facilitate virtual and in-person communication groups for people living with aphasia and related neurological conditions under the direction of registered Speech-Language Pathologists (S-LP).

· Provide individual therapy and conversation sessions under the supervision of a Speech-Language Pathologist (S-LP) in accordance with the College of Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASPLO).

· Create and maintain patient documentation, charting, billing, intake information, monthly statistics, and CRM/database records according to ACO policies and procedures and CASLPO guidelines.

· Develop and adapt aphasia-friendly materials, educational resources, newsletters, and communication supports.

· Provide technology support for clients, families, volunteers, and staff related to virtual participation and devices.

· Support program development, outreach initiatives, social media content, and client/family education.

· Participate in team meetings, staff collaboration, and ongoing program evaluation.

Essential Qualifications

· Completion of a postgraduate diploma from an accredited Communicative Disorders Assistant Program.

· Ability to obtain and maintain membership with CDAAC.

· Ability to work in Ottawa and work remotely from home (private work environment and reliable internet required).

· Vulnerable Sector Check valid within the past six months.

· CPR-C and Standard First Aid (for Healthcare Providers) certified.

· Vaccination (COVID-19 and annual Flu shot) is a requirement of the job unless you have an exemption on a medical ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.

· Knowledge of applicable CASPLO professional guidelines.

Essential Skills and Experience

· Excellent written and verbal communication (in both English and French, required).

· Proficiency in a variety of computer applications on various platforms (Microsoft Office suite, Canva, Zoom, Adobe, databases/CRM, virtual service platforms).

· Superior organizational skills, ability to manage time effectively and be flexible

· Demonstrates superior problem-solving skills and the willingness to ask for help, accept direction when needed.

· Possess an attitude of respect and sensitivity towards clients with diverse backgrounds, abilities, communication needs and educational status.

· Ability to deal with demanding interpersonal situations and respond with good judgment and understanding.

· Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information in a discreet and professional manner.

· Highly self-motivated and able to work independently and take initiative.

· Ability to contribute effectively and positively as part of an interdisciplinary team.

· Maintain accurate and complete client records.

Assets

· Ability to speak and write fluently in both English and French.

· Experience working both in-person and virtual therapy.

· Experience facilitating communication groups and effectively managing group dynamics.

· Knowledge and experience working with persons living with aphasia and stroke using the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA).

· Experience in Stroke and/or Neuro rehabilitation.

· Experience working with persons living with dementia.

· Knowledge of common medical, mental health, and neurological conditions which would impact communication.
