Wit’suwit’en Language Instructor (Smiters)

Job description and duties

Coast Mountain College (CMTN), Smithers campus, invites applications for a Part-time Indigenous Language Instructor as outlined below (subject to minimum enrolment for the 2026 Fall semester. Salary will be in accordance with the CUPE Instructor Scale: (range: $5,775.84 - $9,255.50 per section).

Duties: College Professors are responsible for contributing to the academic success of students. This includes course preparation, teaching and guiding students, providing feedback, correction, encouragement, and direction in the following face-to-face course:

Fall Semester (August 24, 2026 to December 23, 2026)

WITS 101: Introduction to Wit’suwit’en Language I (2 sections – 1 Section for teaching and 1 section for course development)

Note: The course delivery may take place in Witset.

Qualifications

Qualifications: A minimum of both a Master’s degree and a Bachelor’s degree in First Nations Studies along with proficiency in Wit’suwit’en language (confirmed by Wit’suwit’en language authority or language speaking Elders if no language authority in place). A combination of language certification and/or teaching experience teaching Wit’suwit’en language may be considered. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate experience with experiential teaching formats.

Required attributes/experience includes:

Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching with the ability to inspire and mentor learners
Candidates must have very strong skills in conversational Wit’suwit’en
Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities and/or strong ties with Indigenous communities
Knowledge and enthusiasm for the best practices in equity, diversity, and inclusion in the classroom
Excellent interpersonal, communication and facilitation skills

Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
