This role can be based out of one of our main offices, including Stellarton, NS; Mississauga, ON; or Calgary, AB.
Reporting into the Senior Vice President Technology Operations & CISO, the VP Cyber Security is accountable for defining and executing the enterprise cyber security strategy to protect business operations, assets, and teammate and customer data across Empire. This role calls for a leader who can bring both perspective and execution. Someone comfortable operating in a fast-paced setting can navigate ambiguity and can build strong relationships across the organization.

Cyber Strategy & Program Leadership
- Set the enterprise cybersecurity strategy aligned to business objectives and risk tolerance. A security champion responsible for the development and implementation of a robust framework to ensure the protection of systems, networks and data, and sensitive and personal information against security breaches.
- Design and execute a multi-year cyber roadmap to implement controls, tools, and processes that mitigate evolving threats and residual risks
- Define cybersecurity architecture principles aligned with enterprise technology strategy
Governance, Risk & Compliance (GRC)
- Lead enterprise governance, risk, and compliance programs, including risk identification, assessment, mitigation, and reporting
- Own and operate the enterprise cyber risk register
- Develop and enforce cybersecurity policies, standards, and controls
Cyber Defense & Incident Response
- Oversee 24x7 security monitoring, threat management, and incident response
- Lead detection, response, and recovery from cyber incidents to minimize blast radius
- Lead our vulnerability management, offensive security and application security programs
Identity and Access Management
- Lead identity and access management (IAM) strategy and roadmap execution
- Lead IAM operations & ERP GRC programs to support our complex corporate and retail landscape
- Lead IAM compliance program in partnership with Internal Audit
IT Service Management & Observability
- Develop strategy and own execution of long-term vision for IT service capability improvements and supporting technology
- Ownership and governance of key processes – event, incident, problem, change, asset, configuration, knowledge, request management
- Ownership and governance of platforms enabling service management and observability capabilities
Affiliate Program Leadership
- Support & oversee cyber programs across Empire affiliates, including Longo’s, Farm Boy, Crombie REIT, Kim Phat, and Ricardo. Support the Scene+ cyber program as a co-owner.
Cyber Awareness & Culture
- Execute enterprise cyber training and awareness programs
- Promote a culture of cyber vigilance across the organization
Financial & Operational Management
- Ensure delivery of projects on scope, schedule, budget, and quality
- Manage cybersecurity budgets and financial performance
- Drive cost optimization through solution rationalization and partner management
Talent & Leadership
- Lead and develop a highly engaged, high-performing cybersecurity organization
- Drive talent management, including recruitment, retention, and upskilling
- Foster a culture of accountability and high performance
What you have to offer:
- 10+ years of senior leadership in cyber security and IT, including director or VP-level experience leading large teams
- Proven expertise in enterprise cyber strategy, risk management, controls, IAM, 24x7 security operations, and incident response
- Deep understanding of the evolving threat landscape with the ability to adapt defenses and roadmap accordingly
- Strong knowledge of AI technologies and their application in “Security for AI” and “AI for Security.”
- Experience in retail, e-commerce, financial services, or telco – high-transaction, consumer-facing environments preferred
- Proven multi-million-dollar budget management experience
- Executive communication and stakeholder management skills; comfortable presenting to technical and board-level audiences
- Strong business acumen, strategic mindset, and data-driven approach to metrics and reporting
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field preferred; MBA or MS a plus; CISSP or CISM certification preferred
