The Human Performance Lab in the Faculty of Faculty of Kinesiology is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Exercise Physiology Technician for approximately 14 months.
Reporting to the Director, Academic Programs and Administration, and working closely with the Exercise Physiology Technician Coordinator, the role includes technical responsibilities, instructional support duties, and lab supervision in the Faculty of Kinesiology. Duties include assisting with the preparation of course outlines, planning classroom demonstrations, assignments and exams, acting as a critical link between teaching faculty and students. The Exercise Physiology Technician provides essential support to graduate teaching assistants.
The ability to meet deadlines is imperative to ensure optimal coordination of timetabling, shared lab space, and shared lab equipment. Equipment maintenance, calibration, and evaluation are key elements of this position. The Exercise Physiology Technician is a critical instructional resource, actively supporting instructors with needs associated with the exercise physiology lab including preparation of lab material, providing input into the evaluation of student work, and mentoring of graduate students in teaching assistant roles.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Technical

Responsible for developing technical protocols for the advancement of the exercise physiology unit. Protocols involve both the knowledge and skill to use highly technical equipment and the impact of the protocol on human subjects

Evaluate and make recommendations for future purchase decisions of technical equipment for research and teaching

Responsible for conducting regular exercise physiology equipment inventory, as well as maintenance, warranties and contracts

Provide technical training for staff and students on scientific equipment (example: gas spectrometer, metabolic measurement cart, spirometry, physiograph, EMG, ECG, Biodex, biochemical analysis of various blood parameters (lactate, ammonia etc.) and hypoxic altitude equipment

Provide training for staff and students on specific research / testing protocol methodologies

Train relevant personnel in maintenance of equipment, safety procedures, administrative tasks, laboratory manual preparation and physiological testing protocols
Learning and Instruction

Participate in and facilitate the critical activity of updating and revising laboratory exercises and manuals, ensuring the laboratory exercises are responding to the changing needs of the students and of the course

Support instructors who have specific teaching needs; implementing a skills-based methodological approach to instruction across the curriculum

Provide pedagogical leadership and facilitate instructional innovation

Prepare and present the required curriculum thoroughly and effectively

Instruct for preparation of exercise and testing prescription certification courses (e.g. CSEP- CEP)

Guide students work and cooperate with staff while establishing a professional atmosphere

Ensure safety of exercise protocols are followed in Teaching Exercise Physiology labs

Supervise exercise physiology tests in the Teaching Lab and intervene when necessary

Monitor labs and provide feedback to Graduate Assistants Teaching (GATs)

Provide input to calendar and curricular updates

Prepare academic administrative materials regarding both individual student cases and broader program structure
General Lab and Administration

Maintain teaching area exercise physiology area policy

Responsible for ordering and inventory of course related exercise physiology items

Ensure that all safety procedures and standards are implemented and followed by all researchers, students and staff in the Teaching lab, particularly in regard to health screening of subjects and emergency procedures and biohazards
Qualifications / Requirements:
-
Undergraduate degree in the field of Exercise Physiology (graduate degree preferred)

Experience in the exercise physiology profession

Advanced knowledge of exercise physiology theory, exercise testing and prescription, and applied research

Current CPR (Level C), First Aid and CSEP-CEP are required

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
