Position Summary
We are seeking a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) to lead the structural and mechanical design of pump baseplates and pump-motor skid systems for HMFT's Pumps Division. This is a senior engineering role that carries full accountability as the Responsible Member (RM) for HMFT's APEGA Permit to Practice. The Engineer will develop, implement, and maintain the Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP) and will authenticate all pump-related engineering work products on behalf of HMFT. The position reports to the Manager, Technical Sales – Pumps and collaborates with internal technical teams and third-party engineering partners.
Work Location
This role is based in Calgary or Edmonton and requires occasional cross‑border travel to the United States. Successful candidates must be legally authorized to enter the U.S. for work‑related travel and independently meet all applicable travel and immigration requirements.
Responsible Member & Permit to Practice Obligations
As the designated Responsible Member (RM) under HMFT's APEGA Permit to Practice, the Engineer is accountable for the following regulatory obligations:
- Serve as HMFT's registered Responsible Member with APEGA, maintaining all required qualifications and good standing as a practicing licensed professional (P.Eng.).
- Develop, implement, and maintain a current Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP) appropriate to HMFT's scope of engineering practice, in compliance with the APEGA PPMP Practice Standard.
- Authenticate and validate all pump-related engineering work products (drawings, calculations, specifications, reports) produced on behalf of HMFT in accordance with APEGA authentication and practice standards.
- Be accountable for quality control and assurance of all engineering work performed under HMFT's Permit to Practice.
Engineering Design Responsibilities
- Lead the structural and mechanical design of pump baseplates, sole plates, and pump-motor skid assemblies, including load analysis, material selection, fabrication specifications, and sling arrangement.
- Prepare and review engineering calculations, structural analyses, and design documentation for pump baseplate systems in compliance with applicable industry standards.
- Generate, authenticate and validate fully detailed manufacturing drawings including GD&T, welding symbols, and surface finish, etc.
- Define equipment specifications and contribute to the development of engineering plans for fluid handling systems to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation.
- Review and approve designs, drawings, and technical documents prepared by engineering associates and drafting staff.
- Manage and maintain component records, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and engineering documentation in the ERP system (NetSuite).
- Review, validate, and provide professional sign-off on engineered work products for rotary pump systems, including equipment and documentation imported from international suppliers (e.g., European manufacturers), to confirm compliance with Alberta regulations, applicable codes and standards, and APEGA practice standards; ensure all engineering deliverables are suitable for installation and operation within Alberta's jurisdiction
- Develop, implement, and manage standardized shop assembly processes across multiple branch locations to ensure consistent quality, efficiency, and adherence to company procedures
- Evaluate, qualify, and select third-party fabricators to ensure quality, cost-effectiveness, and alignment with project requirements.
- Develop and maintain ISO 9001–compliant quality procedures, identify and drive process improvements (e.g., standardizing pump package offerings), and evaluate and qualify external vendors including machine shops and coating/painting suppliers
Project & Team Responsibilities
- Manage project execution activities including scope definition, contracting, fabrication oversight, and budget and schedule management.
- Collaborate with project managers, technical sales, and third-party engineering partners throughout the project lifecycle.
- Visit manufacturers, fabricators, and customer sites to ensure quality compliance and technical alignment.
- Maintain comprehensive project documentation and engineering records in accordance with HMFT's PPMP and document control requirements.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineering associates and junior technical staff working under the Permit to Practice.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Education & Designation: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related discipline). Active P.Eng. registration with APEGA is mandatory. Minimum 6-10 years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, with demonstrated experience in pump systems, rotating equipment, or industrial fluid handling.
- Prior experience as, or readiness to serve as, an APEGA Responsible Member is strongly preferred.
- Strong expertise in structural and mechanical design of pump baseplates, skids, and related rotating equipment support structures.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD software — Onshape preferred (SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, or equivalent acceptable); strong AutoCAD skills for equipment layouts and P&ID drawings.
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant standards considered an asset:
- ASME Y14.5, ASME BTH-1, W59
- API 676, 610, 682, 675, 614, 674, 686, 671, 541, 547 or any other relevant API standards
- NACE MR0175/ ISO 15156
- ANSI HI standards such as 1.3, 1.4, 1.6, 14.6, 9.6.4, 9.6.6, 9.6.7, 2.6 or any other relevant ANSI HI standards
- ANSI ASME B73.1, B73.2 and B73.3 Pumps
- Industry relevant ASTM or AISC standards
- Hazardous Location Standards - CSA, UL, ATEX, IECex
- Familiarity with APEGA Permit to Practice requirements, PPMP development and maintenance, and professional authentication obligations.
- Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint).
- Knowledge of NetSuite ERP considered a strong asset.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to engage confidently with customers, suppliers, manufacturers, and regulatory bodies.
- Demonstrated project management experience; PMP designation considered an asset.
- Willingness to travel to manufacturers and customer sites as required.
- Ability to travel to the U.S. for training (valid passport and/or visa required)
