Purpose:
To provide strategic oversight and technical leadership for BAS platforms across all CBE schools, ensuring that building automation systems (including HVAC, lighting, energy management, and related infrastructure) are configured, optimized, and continuously improved to support safe, comfortable, and energy-efficient learning environments across the CBE.
Accountability:
Serves as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for BAS, providing guidance to operational staff, coordinating vendor and contractor activities, supporting capital projects, commissioning activities, cybersecurity requirements, and BAS standardization and advancing system performance to support CBE’s long‑term asset management, indoor environmental quality and sustainability goals.
Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic oversight and technical leadership for BAS platforms across the system for all CBE sites.
- Ensure building automation systems (HVAC, lighting, energy management, and related infrastructure) are configured, optimized, and continuously improved.
- Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), guiding operational staff, aligning vendor and contractor activity, and advancing system performance in support of CBE’s long-term asset management and sustainability goals.
- Develop and maintain CBE BAS standards, including sequences of operation, point naming conventions, graphics standards, alarm priorities, trend requirements, documentation standards, and system backup requirements
- Participate in commissioning, retro-commissioning, functional performance testing, integrated systems testing, and project turnover for BAS-related projects
- Review system logs and trend data to proactively identify inefficiencies or potential equipment failures or high energy usage.
- Use BAS trend data, alarms, and analytics to identify opportunities for reducing energy consumption and improving operational efficiency.
- Lead operational staff in implementing scheduling changes, set-point adjustments, and control-logic refinements that support energy efficiency and GHG-reduction targets.
- Ensure building automation sequences support best practices in sustainable operation, including optimized ventilation, temperature resets, demand-based control, and occupancy-based strategies.
- Perform software platform updates, backups, and documentation of Building Management System (BMS) configurations and programming changes in coordination with system vendors and the CBE IT department.
- Assist in the commissioning of new systems and in implementing modifications to existing systems, working with consultants and contractors.
- Verify that new or modified control sequences align with energy-efficient operating practices and long-term sustainability targets.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of work performed, system settings, and service histories, and ensure that control strategies are consistently applied across all CBE facilities.
- Oversee the annual and holiday scheduling of all BAS systems that fall outside extended warranty programs.
- Ensure system schedules minimize unnecessary energy consumption while maintaining occupant comfort and safety.
- Maintain a Holiday Checklist for Facility Operators.
- Provide orientation to new Facility Operators on BMS operation and optimization.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Post-secondary diploma or undergraduate degree in Building Automation, HVAC, Mechanical/Instrumentation, Facilities Management, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering Technology or related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in BMS or BAS systems (e.g. Johnson Controls, Honeywell, and Delta systems).
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in energy management and energy efficiency programs, initiatives, or portfolio administration.
- Experience with commissioning, retro-commissioning, or continuous commissioning of BAS and HVAC systems would be an asset.
- Experience working with large institutional, educational, or multi-building portfolios would be an asset
- Familiarity with NECB, ASHRAE standards, energy codes, and sustainable building operation practices would be an asset
- Experience in energy and utilities management and trades certification in one or more of the applicable trade areas would be an asset.
- An equivalent combination of directly related post-secondary education and directly related experience may be considered
Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:
- Strong computer skills, including Excel, Word, Database applications, Web applications, and BAS front-end software.
- Strong knowledge of Mechanical and Electrical building systems
- Strong understanding of HVAC sequences of operation, including VAV systems, AHUs, RTUs, boilers, hydronic systems, heat recovery, demand-controlled ventilation, optimal start/stop, temperature resets, and static pressure resets.
- Demonstrated experience in data analysis, processing, and presentation.
- Ability to interpret energy performance data and translate findings into building automation strategies to reduce consumption and emissions.
- Ability to use trend logs and BAS analytics to diagnose comfort issues, ventilation problems, control failures, equipment faults, and energy inefficiencies
- Commitment to sustainable building operation and continuous performance improvement.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to keep accurate records.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in interpreting control drawings, wiring diagrams, and schematics, including point lists and sequences of operation.
- Familiarity with IT networks, IP addressing, and protocols used in BAS such as BACnet, Modbus, and LonWorks.
- Strong coordination skills with facility operators, consultants, contractors, vendors, IT staff, and school administration
- Demonstrate knowledge of commissioning and recommissioning processes, including functional performance testing, verification of control sequences, trend log review, deficiency tracking, and coordination with contractors and facility operators to confirm systems operate as intended.
Note: This position requires personal transportation to conduct job responsibilities.

The CBE understands the future of work is flexible. In this role, you are eligible to participate in a flexible work program that allows you to work remotely for up to three days a week. A minimum of two days must be in the office. At certain times, you maybe be required to work in the office more then 2 days per week based on operational requirements.
