OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION
Based in Prince George, with work in both Tsay Keh Dene and Prince George, the Family Support Worker plays a vital role in the Tsay Keh communities by working with youth, families, and seniors. This position focuses on a broad prevention approach and skill development. A core responsibility is assessing risk and providing services and resources to address those risks, often acting as a direct support resource.
The Family Support Worker collaborates closely with the Manager, Director, and the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) in child protection assessments and related family service work. Key duties include conducting family assessments, setting goals, creating care plans, safety planning, providing direct client support, problem-solving, counseling, and guardianship.
Additionally, the Family Support Worker will coordinate life skills, recreational activities, and camping opportunities for youth aged 10–25. This role also includes supporting seniors through service requests and organizing appropriate group activities. The Family Support Worker will incorporate a strengths-based and generational trauma-informed approach into their practice.
VISION
The Tsay Keh Social Development Department is undergoing a rebuilding process to establish a highly skilled team capable of addressing generational trauma issues, including child welfare, grief and loss, family violence, and addictions. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working in Collaboration with the Social Development Manager and Director
- Conduct risk assessments.
- Develop and implement case management plans.
- Provide comprehensive family support services that foster independence and address generational trauma.
- Co-develop and facilitate educational, counseling, and workshop modules for individuals and the community.
- Assist the Youth Worker in organizing recreational and life skills workshops.
- Support seniors with their personal needs.
- Provide emotional support to children, youth, families, and seniors.
RESOURCE COORDINATION
- Connect families with accessible community resources.
- Advocate for families in accessing necessary services and benefits.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of available services and resources in Tsay Keh Dene, Prince George, and surrounding areas.
- Assist with arrangements for family camps, treatment programs, community events, and services across all departments.
GUIDANCE
- Offer guidance and support to families addressing personal and family-related issues.
- Facilitate family meetings to promote communication and problem-solving.
- Ensure children remain culturally connected to their community and family.
CRISIS INTERVENTION
- Work with the team to respond effectively to urgent situations.
- Develop appropriate follow-up plans with team support.
- Ensure families have access to urgent response services.
DOCUMENTATION AND REPORTING
- Maintain accurate and timely records of client interactions and progress.
- Ensure confidentiality in all service-related matters.
- Prepare reports and documentation as required by policy and funding guidelines.
- Track and analyze data to assess the effectiveness of support services.
COLLABORATION AND NETWORKING
- Work closely with social workers, counselors, and educators to address child protection concerns and support families.
- Participate in community meetings and collaborate with local organizations to enhance service delivery.
- Advocate for the needs and rights of families when working with service providers.
- Support families in navigating and understanding legal and social service systems.
- Attend court hearings to support clients in family court matters.
REQUIREMENTS
- A degree in Human Services or a related field is preferred.
- Minimum of two years of experience providing family or individual support services.
- Ability to facilitate family support sessions and workshops.
- Cultural and political sensitivity.
- Ability to engage individuals of diverse cultures and age groups.
- Conflict resolution skills and ability to manage emotionally charged situations.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy, respect, and effective communication.
- Ability to uphold confidentiality, diplomacy, and privacy.

- Valid driver’s license.
- Willingness to travel and work in remote areas, including flying and driving long distances on back roads.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Ability to travel and stay in camp for extended periods.
- Overtime may be required with pre-approval.
- Manual dexterity required for using desktop computers and peripherals.
- Physical activity, including walking, standing, sitting, lifting, and supporting clients.
- Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
