Role Purpose
Reporting to the Director, Conservation, the Resource Management Technician is responsible for implementing field-based conservation, management, monitoring support, and restoration activities across the Meewasin Valley jurisdiction. This position supports delivery of Site Resource Management Plans and Conservation Program priorities through practical, on-the-ground actions. The role involves disturbance-based management, vegetation management, ecological restoration support, invasive species management, field data collection, and operational program support. The Technician works closely with Senior Coordinators, GIS Analysts, and seasonal staff to ensure conservation activities are executed safely, accurately, and efficiently. This position involves a combination of office-based and field-based responsibilities. This is a field-capable position requiring sustained outdoor work.
Duties
1. Field Implementation & Operations Support
Implement field-based conservation and land management activities
Support implementation of Site Resource Management Plans and annual workplans
Assist with prescribed fire, targeted grazing, and vegetation management operations Conduct integrated invasive species management, including herbicide application
Support ecological restoration and habitat enhancement activities
2. Monitoring, Data Collection & Technical Support
Collect, document, and manage field data supporting baseline inventories and monitoring programs
Operate GPS and related field data collection tools
Work with GIS Analysts to support spatially explicit data collection and validation
Assist with development of baseline inventories, resource management plans, and annual reports
Ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency of field observations and records
3. Planning & Reporting Support
Assist Senior Coordinators with preparation of resource management plans, workplans, and implementation summaries
Support documentation and reporting of site-level management activities
4. Equipment & Field Systems
Safely operate and maintain field tools, vehicles, and equipment
Support equipment preparation, maintenance, and logistics
5. Safety & Compliance
Adhere to organizational safety policies and field procedures
Maintain required safety certifications and licenses
Participate in prescribed fire operations and training as appropriate Maintain awareness of operational hazards and safe work practices
6. Team & Program Support
Work collaboratively with Coordinators, Technicians, GIS staff, and seasonal personnel
Support field activities involving students and assistants
Contribute to efficient and effective Conservation Program delivery
The ideal candidate will have:
- Degree or diploma in resource management, environmental science, ecology, agriculture, or a related discipline
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience in field‑based conservation, land management, ecological restoration, monitoring support, or similar applied environmental work (a combination of education and experience may be considered)
- A valid Industrial Herbicide Applicator License Valid First Aid certification (Wilderness First Aid considered an asset)
- Demonstrated proficiency in GPS use and field data collection methodologies
- Ability to accurately collect, document, and manage field‑derived data
- Strong field skills supported by practical problem‑solving ability and sound judgment in dynamic operational environments
- Ability to work safely and effectively outdoors in variable conditions across all seasons
- Capacity to work in a team‑oriented, adaptable, and self‑directed manner
- Ability to perform sustained outdoor field work
- Willingness to participate in prescribed fire training and operations
- Ability to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check
- GIS skills, including familiarity with spatial data systems and GIS concepts
- Eligibility for professional designation (P.Ag., P.Bio., or equivalent)
- Experience with prescribed fire planning or implementation
Pay: $46,041.00-$55,962.00 per year
