Job Title: Horizontal Boring Mill Machinist
Job Description
This role focuses on setting up and machining extremely large custom and production components on floor-type horizontal boring mills in a large fabrication environment. You will interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T requirements, perform precision machining on parts up to 100 tons, and ensure all work meets stringent quality and safety standards. The position requires strong technical expertise, comfort working at heights and with overhead cranes, and a commitment to continuous improvement in machining efficiency and tooling performance.
Responsibilities

Review complete job packages, including engineering drawings, work orders, job travellers, sketches, and specifications before starting work.

Set up and machine extremely large components on floor-type horizontal boring mills, including parts up to 100 tons and up to approximately 30 inches in diameter.

Operate horizontal boring mills from floor level, elevated platforms, or cabins as required to safely access the work area.

Machine components in accordance with drawings, job travellers, and sketches, ensuring strict adherence to dimensional and geometric requirements.

Interpret engineering drawings and GD&T requirements to plan and execute machining operations accurately.

Perform pre-inspection of parts and setups prior to material removal to confirm alignment, workholding, and reference points.

Modify CNC programs, tool offsets, and cutting parameters as required to achieve specified tolerances and surface finishes.

Perform a full range of machining operations, including boring, drilling, facing, milling, tapping, and fitting operations as needed.

Measure and record critical dimensions using precision measuring instruments to verify compliance with specifications.

Operate overhead cranes to move and position large components, coordinating closely with rigging teams to ensure safe handling.

Ensure all work complies with ISO standards as well as customer and internal quality requirements.

Report non-conformances promptly and support root cause analysis and corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Maintain accurate part traceability, including recording job numbers, work order numbers, and material identification.

Identify and communicate opportunities to improve machining efficiency, tooling performance, and overall process reliability.

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with housekeeping and 5S principles.

Follow all safety procedures, including PPE requirements and safe rigging practices, at all times.

Comply with all applicable health, safety, and environmental standards and regulations, including CCOHS and WHMIS guidelines.
Essential Skills

Minimum of 5 years of hands-on machining experience, including work on horizontal boring mills or similar large machining equipment.

Proven experience machining very large components, including handling and machining parts in the 3–5 ton range or larger.

Demonstrated capability to machine components up to approximately 30 inches in diameter.

Strong understanding of GD&T principles and the ability to interpret and apply them directly from engineering drawings.

Advanced blueprint reading skills for complex mechanical and fabricated components.

Experience machining both custom and production parts with tight tolerances.

Proficiency in setup and operation of horizontal boring mills, including tooling selection and workholding.

Ability to modify CNC programs, tool offsets, and cutting parameters at the machine control.

Experience operating overhead cranes safely to lift, move, and position heavy components.

Comfort working at heights on platforms or in cabins when required by the job.

Ability to perform precise fitting, alignment, and verification of large components.

Familiarity with ISO-quality requirements and internal quality control procedures.

Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of machining processes such as boring, drilling, facing, milling, and tapping.

Commitment to following health, safety, and environmental standards, including CCOHS and WHMIS requirements.

Ability to accurately measure and record critical dimensions using precision measuring instruments.
Additional Skills & Qualifications

Experience with Siemens or Fanuc CNC controls is an asset.

Experience working at heights beyond basic requirements is considered an advantage.

Working to very tight tolerances, including tolerances around 0.0005 inches, is preferred.

Additional overhead crane experience beyond basic operation is considered a strong asset.
-
Red Seal Machinist certification is nice to have but not mandatory.

Experience with lathes, vertical mills, and other machining equipment is beneficial.

Experienced in mechanical fabrication or working within a fabrication shop environment is an asset.

Familiarity with both custom and production machining workflows and documentation is advantageous.

Work Environment
The role is based in a large custom fabrication shop that manufactures parts for construction, nuclear, military, and commercial applications. The facility is well lit and clean, with a loud production environment typical of heavy machining and fabrication operations. You will work primarily on floor-type horizontal boring mills and may also interact with other machining and fabrication equipment. Overhead cranes are used regularly to move large and heavy components, and some work will be performed from elevated platforms or cabins. The standard schedule is a day shift from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with overtime available based on workload and project demands. Appropriate personal protective equipment is required in the shop at all times.
