The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Clinical Teaching Technician for approximately 24 months.
The Clinical Teaching Technician reports to the Manager, Clinical Teaching Technicians (CTT). The Clinical Teaching Technician will also receive direction from the Course Coordinators and faculty members regarding the delivery of the clinical skills and other relevant courses. The Clinical Teaching Technician will work closely with the animal husbandry technicians and other members of the Animal Support Unit team including the ASU Manager and the Manager Veterinary Medicine Spy Hill Operations within the University of Calgary, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM).
This position exists to support clinical and practical teaching sessions that support undergraduate courses (primarily clinical skills, professional skills, 4th year rotations and external
clinical-based events) across all years of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program. This position is also involved in supporting clinical teaching off campus and supporting various clinical research activities.
This position is an excellent opportunity for an RVT with substantial equine experience who thrives in dynamic, hands on teaching environments. As a Clinical Teaching Technician, you will play a supporting role in the management of herd health. You will also play a major role in equine instruction across all years of the DVM program, ensuring safe, high quality learning experiences while collaborating with faculty, students, and animal care teams.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Clinical Teaching Technicians, ensures animals are available for teaching purposes, both in supply required and desired health conditions for individual courses

Participates in preparing and assembling suitable teaching animals, specimens, and other required resources for all clinical based teaching at the Spy Hill Campus (mainly Clinical Skills but can also include Professional Skills, 4th Year rotations, Anatomy, DSU, (animal movement for live labs), outside events that are clinical in nature)

Provides technical and teaching support for all aspects of clinical veterinary medicine teaching, including anesthesiology, medicine, surgery, imaging and other diagnostics in a variety of domestic and non-domestic species

Creation, development, and maintenance of simulators for Veterinary teaching with oversight and direction from faculty

Monitors and assesses general animal health, conducts in-depth heath assessments and reports issues/concerns to the Veterinarian. Each technician is assigned a species to ensure herd health of each species and to report back to the Assistant University Veterinarian

Communication with public donors on sensitive issues related to animal donation for teaching and research

Assist with inventory maintenance of required supplies as well as ordering and processing invoices through PeopleSoft. Participates in the forecasting of budgets with coordinators and budget owner with regards to the courses they are supporting

Identifies equipment repair needs through trouble shooting, advises the Manager Veterinary Medicine Spy Hill Operations in conjunction with the Equipment and Operations Technician

Complies with all SOPs, safety protocols, processes, practices, policies and procedures to ensure the smooth and safe operation of laboratories. Demonstrates safe practices to students and advises on all laboratory procedures as required

Advises Manager, CTT of any inappropriate laboratory use

May assist in identifying Hazard Assessments and or participate on occupational health and safety committees

Ensures incidents or occupational illness are properly documented and reported as outlined in University of Calgary Safety and Security protocols
Qualifications / Requirements:

An Animal Health Technology diploma and registration (or eligibility for registration) as an Animal Health Technologist in Alberta in addition to 3 to 5 years previous clinical experience as an Animal Health Technologist in a clinical setting is required

Ability to communicate and impart knowledge to students and faculty is required

Demonstrated knowledge of operating room procedures and aseptic techniques as well as anesthesiology and post-operative patient care

The ability to restrain and handle a wide variety of species, particularly large animals

A thorough knowledge of University Animal Welfare Committee and CCAC guidelines is necessary (may be acquired on the job), as well as sanitation, disinfection, and sterilization principles

Strong verbal and written communication skills to facilitate interaction with a variety of facilities users is needed (fluency in English is necessary) as well as the ability to work independently.

Demonstrated teamwork skills, strong organizational, and excellent interpersonal skills

Willingness to research, prepare and execute Lab teaching sessions as directed by faculty

Having previous experience in a teaching or research setting would be considered an asset
