About the position:
We are a great interdisciplinary team that values collaboration, personal fulfillment, and professional and personal development. Our diverse mental health team currently includes two psychologists working in a supportive, enriching, and people-centered environment.
Please note that this position is a part-time role consisting of 28 hours per week.
Position Purpose:
As a member of an interdisciplinary health team in a student wellness centre, the incumbent assesses, diagnoses, and treats mental, emotional and behavioural disorders ranging from short-term personal issues to severe, chronic conditions. As a practitioner in a teaching health service, the psychologist also plays a role in supervising practicums and internships aimed at supporting the academic and clinical success of these trainees and of all students who come to the centre. As a member of the mental health team, the incumbent will support uOttawa’s commitment to create a learning, living and working environment that fosters compassion, care and wellbeing through innovation, education, research, health promotion and inclusive practices.
In this role, your responsibilities will include:
Examine and assess behaviour, diagnose behavioural, emotional and cognitive disorders.
Conduct psychological assessment to determine mental health needs and create an individualized treatment plan, often in collaboration with centre physicians, psychiatrists, and psychotherapists.
Treat psychological disorders to effect improved functioning utilizing various psychological techniques; selects appropriate treatment approach and plans frequency, intensity, and duration of individual, group, and couple therapies.
Provide time-limited psychoeducation and interventions for acute and chronic illness, using evidence-based treatment for mental health conditions. This may include individual or group psychotherapy.
Apply psychological theory and principles about mental distress and disorders, and mental processes such as learning, memory, perception, etc.
Develop, implement, and provide learning modules seminars, workshops, as well as various educational materials (ex: resiliency modules) to promote health and wellness practices.
Direct clients, when appropriate, to specialized services at the clinic or in the community in collaboration with other University and community resources.
Assesses patient progress and modifies treatment programs accordingly; communicates with and counsels family members as appropriate.
Documents therapy in accordance with policies and procedures regarding medical records; implements and adheres to policies which ensure patient confidentiality.
Provides crisis intervention in situations requiring immediate psychological treatment.
Participates in educational programs, in-service meetings, clinician meetings, and workshops to enhance professional development and maintain currency of methodology and techniques.
Provides psychological consultations to other mental health professionals within the Student Wellness Centre.
Instruct and direct students serving psychological internships
May develop and implement clinical research programs.
What you will bring:
A doctoral degree in psychology is required from a CPA or APA accredited program.
Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a clinical psychologist.
Registered or eligible for registration with the College of Psychologists of Ontario with competencies in the areas of Clinical and Health Psychology.
Applied experience with youth, LGBTQIA2S+, indigenous, racialized, BIPOC students.
Bilingualism : French and English (spoken and written), to be considered for this position, candidates must be rated at the Low Advanced proficiency level or higher for both oral comprehension and reading comprehension in their second official language. The rating is determined by a proficiency test designed by the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute.
Extensive knowledge and experience with evidence-based and trauma informed treatment techniques including cognitive based therapy (CBT, Traditional and Third Wave CBT) and motivational interviewing.
Demonstrated experience in Trauma-Informed Care.
Demonstrated ability to respect diversity and use inclusive behavior, responding with sensitivity and self-awareness to the unique needs of students and colleagues.
Extensive knowledge of mental health and substance use disorders.
Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills and collegiality.
Applies ethical principles in all aspects of their work.
Experience in assessment. Also possesses the ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.
Ability to assess mental status in clients and to develop individual treatment goals and plans
Knowledge of psychological test administration, scoring, and interpretation.
Interviewing and psychological/developmental evaluation skills.
Experience in program development and teaching/supervising students will be considered an asset.
Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques.
Ability to effectively communicate medical information, test results, diagnoses and/or proposed treatment in an ethical manner that is easily understood by the student.
Ability to evaluate the progress of therapy and to make individual modifications.
Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
Previous experience in the medical education environment will be considered an asset.
Knowledge of the community resources network.
Ability to maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stresses.
Skill in preparing and maintaining patient records.
Must be able to pass a police record check for work with vulnerable populations.
Demonstrated ability to respect diversity and use inclusive behavior, responding with sensitivity and self-awareness to the unique needs of students, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity.
