Summer Sailing Coach
Spend your summer coaching sailing on the water! The Whitby Yacht Club Sailing School is looking for a Summer Sailing Instructor (seasonal employee). The instructor will lead a group of campers in Dinghy Sailing working on their CANSail levels following the Sail Canada and Ontario Sailing curriculum, as well as leading evening/weekend adult dinghy sessions.
Responsibilities:
- Act as a role model and to represent the sailing school and Whitby Yacht Club in a positive manner
- Organize and lead a variety of group activities each week, planning lessons that follow the CANSail curriculum
- Leading group on-land and on-water through lessons and activities
- Teaching on-land lessons followed by leading campers safely out on the water
- Teaching evening/weekend adult dinghy courses at least once a week
- Ensure sites cleanliness and organization
- Communicate with parents about sailors experiences and report concerns to Camp Management
- Assist in creating and maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, attendance, tracking and keeping updated levels of sailors, etc.
- Other duties as may arise from time to time and may be assigned to the employee
Mandatory Qualifications:
- Must have completed and passed CANSail 1 & 2 Instructor course, being qualified to teach beginner participants at the CANSail 1 & 2 Level (minimum) (It is not mandatory to have this completed before interviewing. Support will be provided for successful applicants)
- Ontario Boating License (Pleasure Craft Operators Card) & OSA Boaters Safety Course completion
- Strong programming, leadership and organizational skills
- Excellent communication and problem solving skills
- Highly motivated and willing to take initiative while functioning in a team environment.
- Previous sailing experience
- Approved police record check (with vulnerable sector check)
- To be eligible, applicants must (As Per Canada Summer Jobs):
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
- Successful candidates must dedicate themselves to this role for up to 10 weeks of programming.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications:
- Additional CANSail Instructor Qualifications (Any CANSail 1-6 instructor qualification levels) is a benefit
- Previous experience working with children
- Recreational experience in dinghy sailing
- Comfortability in and around the water
- CPR and First Aid training
