Steel Production Worker: Bowmanville Service Center

Position Summary
Reporting to the Production Supervisor, the Production Worker is responsible for operating various shop equipment to prepare steel orders for on-time delivery to Salit customers. This role ensures all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company and customer quality standards.
This position is based at our Bowmanville location: 222 Baseline Rd E, Bowmanville, ON.
This position requires the employee to work night shift: 11:00pm - 7:00am. However, training would be conducted on Morning shifts 7am - 3pm or afternoon shift 3pm- 11pm.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties

Operate machinery, equipment, and tools safely and efficiently.
Identify and retrieve structural steel and rebar from warehouse racks to fill customer orders.
Feed and unload processing machines as required.
Ensure machine guards are in place and materials are handled safely at all times.
Wear appropriate safety equipment as specified.
Operate overhead cranes (training and certification required prior to operation).
Operate cutting saws, rebar benders, and shears (training provided).
Use measuring tape to verify material lengths and bends in rebar steel.
Follow work instructions, procedures, and company policies.
Report any unsafe acts or conditions immediately.
Maintain regular attendance and arrive on time for scheduled shifts.
Keep work areas clean, safe, and organized.
Comply with Section 28 of the Occupational Health & Safety Act.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a non-climate-controlled environment; temperatures vary based on weather and season. Dress appropriately for conditions.
Requires continuous walking and standing.
Occasional heavy lifting—use two-person lift techniques or lifting devices (e.g., overhead cranes) for heavier loads.
Work in yard and shop environments; expect dusty and dirty conditions—wear suitable clothing.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand and walk for long periods.
Lift up to 50 lbs (23 kg) safely.
Required PPE: hard hat, safety glasses, earplugs, gloves, and approved safety boots.
Strong hand-eye coordination and attention to detail.
Demonstrated accountability, dependability, and teamwork.

Core Competencies

Ability to stand, bend, and lift safely.
Read and interpret a tape measure.
Read and write in English.
Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, and simple fractions).
Effective communication skills.
Ethics, integrity, and teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.
2–3 years of experience in a manufacturing or construction environment preferred.
Overhead crane or forklift operating experience is an asset.
Approved safety footwear required.
