Position Summary
Reporting to the CEO, the Corporate Bookkeeper/Accountant plays a critical leadership role at Vantage, overseeing accounting operations, financial management, and strategic financial analysis. The position functions within the Operations Team, while working collaboratively with other departments and team members to achieve Vantage’s mission and vision and make a positive impact in our community. This role is particularly critical given Vantage’s Alberta Government funding model, ongoing growth plans, and periods of organizational change. The Corporate Bookkeeper/Accountant will play a key role in maintaining financial stability, supporting strategic decision-making, and ensuring continuity of financial oversight during periods of change and growth.
The role requires sound professional judgment and the ability to provide financial leadership in complex and evolving environments. The Corporate Bookkeeper/Accountant requires a competent, experienced accounting professional to take ownership of the organization’s accounting function. The role will be the financial backbone of Vantage, responsible for data entry, keeping the numbers clean, current, and defensible, while supporting leadership with real insight. This is an in-office leadership role responsible for accuracy, controls, reporting, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities
1. Payroll and Day-to-Day Accounting Operations
- Full cycle accounting ownership
- Review timesheets and process payroll accurately and on time
- Calculate and record fixed assets and depreciation
- Maintain accurate financial records and establish, maintain and balance various accounts using manual and computerized bookkeeping systems
- Post journal entries, accruals, AP/AR and maintain supporting documentation
- Reconcile bank, credit card, and general ledger accounts
- Monthly, quarterly, and year-end close with accuracy and timeliness
2. General Ledger and Financial Reporting
- Maintain accurate general ledgers and financial statements
- Prepare trial balances and ensure accuracy of account balances
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with applicable Canadian accounting standards (ASNPO / Canadian GAAP)
- Prepare statistical, financial, and internal management reports as required
- Deliver clear reporting and analysis to leadership (not just numbers—insight)
- Identify inefficiencies, errors, weak controls and fix them
3. Taxation & Statutory Filings
- Prepare and file tax returns and statutory remittances
- Ensure that statutory remittances, reporting and required filings are up to date including T3010, GST, T4, AGLC.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations and reporting requirements
4. Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Analysis
- Generate monthly budget-to-actual variance reports for leadership, ensuring transparency and providing clear guidance on risks and priorities.
- Monitor cash flow and liquidity to ensure the organization's financial stability.
- Provide strategic support to the Senior leadership in resource allocation across key priorities.
- Regularly update financial forecasts that identify trends and key issues to support the leadership in making timely and informed strategic decisions.
- Update and leverage pre-determined KPIs to analyze financial data, identify trends, and provide insights to support informed decision-making by the leadership team.
- Develop multi-year financial scenarios to assess sustainability, cash flow, and risk
5. Audit, Controls & Risk Management
- Coordinate annual organizational and program audits and liaise with auditors to ensure timely completion of the audit process and external reporting requirements
- Ensure strong internal controls are in place across finance and business support operations, including updating policies and procedures as needed.
- Update and maintain financial policies and procedures as required
- Improve workflows and documentation so the business scales cleanly
6. Corporate Compliance & Leadership Support
- Provide support in ensuring corporate licenses and registrations remain current (e.g., Business License, property exemption renewals)
- Work with the CEO to ensure corporate insurance coverage is appropriately structured and up to date to mitigate risks.
- Provide financial insights and strategic support to senior leadership on resource allocation and risk mitigation
7. Business Development Support
- Provide strategic financial leadership to support sustainable growth, social enterprise initiatives, and mission-aligned revenue development.
- Evaluate new business development opportunities, capital-intensive growth initiatives, programs, and partnerships by providing financial scenario analysis, including cash flow forecasts, and risk assessments in collaboration with the CEO and leadership.
- Contribute financial insights to funding proposals, social enterprise initiatives, and growth planning.
Qualifications/Experience
We are not looking for potential - we are looking for capability.
- Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
- 5 to 8 years of hands-on experience in a comparable role, with proven full-cycle accounting responsibility
- Practical experience with Canadian payroll processing
- Strong understanding of Canadian tax, statutory, and financial reporting requirements
- Treasury experience, including working with banks, is an asset
- Proficiency in QuickBooks Online (QBO)
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office / MS Office Suite
- Comfort leveraging emerging technologies, including AI, to improve efficiency and accuracy
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, critical-thinking, and decision-making abilities, including the ability to exercise sound judgment when complete information may not be available
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, take ownership of outcomes, and manage priorities with minimal supervision
- Proven ability to identify issues, recommend solutions, and follow through implementation
- Able to work effectively under pressure while managing competing priorities, deadlines, and ambiguity
- Independent thinker who collaborates effectively with employees, managers, and senior leadership
- Experience working in a government-funded, non-profit, social services, healthcare, or similarly resource-conscious environment is an asset
- High level of professional maturity, sound judgment, discretion and accountability
- Proven diligence in protecting confidential and sensitive information
- Strong communication, relationship-building skills and stakeholder management skills
- Experience supporting organizations through growth, operational complexity, organizational change, or periods of transition is considered an asset.

- Not a role for someone who simply processes transactions without analyzing the story behind the numbers.
Working Conditions
- In-office position based in Calgary with occasional travel to multiple local worksites and no option to work remotely
