Director of Legal Surveys
Job Purpose
DMSE is seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Legal Surveys to lead and oversee all legal survey operations across the organization. This position is based in Saint John, New Brunswick, and offers an exciting opportunity for a motivated professional looking to advance their leadership career within a growing and dynamic organization.

The Director of Legal Surveys will be responsible for managing survey teams, ensuring the technical excellence and regulatory compliance of all legal survey deliverables, and driving operational efficiency and business growth. This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to foster long-term relationships with clients, municipalities, developers, and industry stakeholders.
The ideal candidate is a proven leader with extensive experience in legal land surveying, land development, and project management, combined with a strong commitment to quality, professionalism, and team development.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and direction for the Legal Surveys division, aligning departmental operations with company goals and growth strategies.
- Develop and implement operational strategies to improve efficiency, profitability, quality, and client satisfaction.
- Lead, mentor, and support survey managers, project leads, field crews, and technical staff.
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing team environment.
- Participate in senior leadership planning, budgeting, forecasting, and organizational development initiatives.
Legal Survey Operations
- Oversee all legal survey projects including boundary surveys, subdivisions, real property reports, easements, rights-of-way, condominium developments, and construction-related legal surveys.
- Ensure all survey deliverables meet professional standards, regulatory requirements, and company quality expectations.
- Review and approve legal survey plans, reports, and documentation prior to submission.
- Ensure efficient allocation of personnel, equipment, and resources across projects.
- Maintain strong knowledge of provincial land survey legislation, standards, and best practices.
Team Development & Mentorship
- Lead recruitment, onboarding, training, and professional development initiatives within the Legal Surveys division.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching and mentorship to staff.
- Promote continuous learning and technical excellence within the team.
- Support succession planning and leadership development initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional designation as a Licensed Land Surveyor (NBLS or equivalent provincial designation).
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in legal surveying, including leadership or management experience.
Technical Skills
- Strong expertise in legal land surveying principles, boundary analysis, subdivision design, and land development.
- Advanced proficiency with survey technologies and software including:
- AutoCAD Civil 3D
- GIS platforms
- GPS and total station equipment
- Survey data processing software
- Strong understanding of provincial and municipal regulations related to land development and legal surveys.
- Experience managing complex legal survey projects and multidisciplinary teams.

Pay: $45.00-$65.00 per hour
