North Okanagan Friendship Center Society

The North Okanagan Friendship Center Society (NOFCS) is seeking a compassionate, reliable, and community-minded Casual Child & Youth Worker to support youth accessing the Youth Safe House program in Vernon, BC.

The Youth Safe House provides a safe, supportive, and culturally respectful environment for youth in residential care. This position plays an important role in supporting youth wellness, daily living skills, emotional safety, and community connection.

Position Details

Position Title: Casual Child & Youth Worker
Location: Vernon, British Columbia
Employment Type: Casual / On-Call
Hours: Variable shifts including days, evenings, overnight, weekends, and statutory holidays as required
Start Date: As soon as possible
Reports To: Program Manager
Salary Range: $24-26 hour

Key Responsibilities

The Casual Child & Youth Worker will:

Build trusting and respectful relationships with youth
Support youth in achieving personal goals and independent living skills
Assist with daily routines, meal preparation, and household upkeep
Provide emotional support, mentorship, and crisis intervention when needed
Maintain appropriate case notes, incident documentation, and communication records
Support youth with appointments, community access, recreation, and cultural activities
Help maintain a safe, healthy, and supportive living environment
Observe, assess, and report concerns related to youth wellbeing and safety
Work collaboratively with staff, community partners, and support networks
Follow program policies, confidentiality requirements, and safety procedures
Participate in team meetings, training, and program activities as required

Qualifications & Experience

Preferred candidates will have:

Certificate, diploma, or education in Child & Youth Care, Human Services, Social Work, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience working with youth in residential care, community services, or crisis support settings
Knowledge of trauma-informed, culturally safe, and strength-based approaches
Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently and respond appropriately in crisis situations
Understanding of Indigenous cultures, communities, and traditions is considered an asset

Required Certifications & Clearances

Successful applicants must be able to provide:

A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence
Current First Aid/CPR certification
A satisfactory Criminal Record Check including the vulnerable sector

Wage & Benefits

Competitive casual wage based on qualifications and experience
Percentage in lieu of benefits and vacation pay in accordance with BC Employment Standards
Ongoing training and professional development opportunities

Working Conditions

This is a casual/on-call position that may require working flexible hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Staff may occasionally support youth in crisis situations and should be comfortable working in a residential environment.
