JOB TITLE: Cedar House Shelter Supervisor

REPORTS TO: Nova Scotia Native Women’s Association Executive Director

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Shelter Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of Cedar House and supporting a safe, respectful, trauma-informed, and culturally grounded environment for participants, staff, and visitors. This position provides leadership and guidance to shelter staff while ensuring programs, services, safety procedures, and organizational policies are followed.

The Shelter Supervisor supports participant wellbeing through crisis response, advocacy, staff supervision, operational coordination, and community collaboration while helping maintain a supportive and culturally safe shelter environment for Indigenous women, children, and families.

RESPONSIBILTIES:

Leadership & Operations:

Oversee the daily operations of Cedar House
Supervise, support, and guide shelter staff in daily responsibilities and service delivery.
Develop and maintain staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage.
Support staff orientation, training, and ongoing professional development.
Facilitate team meetings, debriefings, and regular communication with staff.
Ensure organizational policies, procedures, and safety protocols are followed.
Respond appropriately to emergencies, incidents, and crisis situations.
Communicate operational concerns and incidents to the Executive Director in a timely manner.
Support a healthy, respectful, and collaborative work environment.
Coordinate household maintenance, supplies, and purchasing needs.

Participant Support:

Support participants using a trauma-informed, culturally safe, and non-judgemental approach.
Assist participants with safety planning, goal setting, advocacy, and accessing community resources.
Provide crisis intervention, emotional support, and referrals as needed.
Promote participant wellbeing, dignity, independence, and personal safety.
Support participants in developing life skills, healthy routines, and community connections.
Always maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
Support culturally relevant programming, activities, and healing approaches.
Work collaboratively with community agencies, service providers, and Indigenous organizations to support participant needs.

Administration & Documentation:

Maintain accurate participant records, case notes, daily logs, and statistical data in accordance with organizational and funder requirements.
Complete intake, admission, discharge, and incident documentation as required.
Ensure medications are documented, stored, counted, and dispensed in accordance with organizational procedures.
Support program reporting and operational documentation requirements.
Monitor inventory and ensure the shelter environment remains clean, organized, and safe.

Organizational Responsibilities:

Participate in staff meetings, committees, training, and organizational activities as requested.
Support the mission, vision, and values of NSNWA and Cedar House.
Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, cultural humility, and ethical practice.
Maintain awareness and understanding of Indigenous cultures, communities, traditions, and the impacts of violence and intergenerational trauma.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Diploma or degree in a social services field, or a combination of relevant education and experience.
Experience working in shelter services, crisis intervention, social services, or community support programs.
Leadership and supervisory experience considered an asset.
Knowledge of domestic violence, gender-based violence, interpersonal violence, and trauma-informed practice.
Strong communication, organization, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced and emotionally demanding environment.
Demonstrated ability to work respectfully with Indigenous communications and diverse populations.
Valid drivers license.
Current Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
First Aid/CPR certification considered an asset.
Additional training may be provided by NSNWA.

Salary: Starting at $65,00; based on experience and education.
