About Anishnabeg Outreach (AO) & AONest
Anishnabeg Outreach (AO) is an Indigenous-led non-profit and registered charity that drives tangible and positive transformation within First Nation, Inuit, and Métis (FNIM) communities. Our mission is to provide a sustainable and comprehensive suite of centralized, wrap-around services, acting as an innovative hub for reconciliation, economic development, and wellness. Currently, we serve the Waterloo Region and we are now expanding our support to Indigenous communities across Canada.
The work we do starts at our Centres for Reconciliation in Kitchener and Guelph, Ontario. We define reconciliation as healing and economic independence for Indigenous individuals. Presently, Indigenous communities face almost insurmountable barriers to reconciliation, stemming from unresolved intergenerational trauma and resulting in food insecurity, homelessness, incarceration, and suicide. Many Indigenous are unemployable which means they cannot gain economic independence. We wish to help heal all currently unemployable Indigenous by helping them address their mental health concerns, build their spirit, rebuild family and community, recover language, culture, traditions, and ceremony, gain essential life skills, and become job-ready.
To that end, AO developed a software system called AONest which offers self-guided mental health management and outcomes. AONest provides accessible, 24/7 digital resources grounded in Indigenous teachings, such as the Medicine Wheel and Grandfather Teachings, combined with clinical mental health practices. The content is delivered through thousands of hours of videos and users can complete accompanying worksheets. The courses are organized into four portals: Mental Health, Spirit Building, Foundational Relationship Skills, and Essential Life Skills.
We are giving AONest to 10 Indigenous communities, social service agencies, and partner organizations across Ontario. This role is a key part of that effort.
AO is launching a new pilot project in York Region in partnership with Your Support Services Network (YSSN). This project focuses on identifying community needs, supporting Indigenous residents, strengthening partnerships, and advancing reconciliation across the region.

Position Summary
The Community Service Worker will work closely with AO’s Indigenous Relations Manager (IRM) to support community engagement, research, outreach activities, and program development for the York Region Pilot Project.
This position is ideal for a youth (15–30 years old) interested in Indigenous community work, mental health, social services, cultural programming, community development, or research.
Youth with lived Indigenous experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities
Community Engagement Support

Assist the Indigenous Relations Manager in connecting with Indigenous residents across York Region
Help organize community conversations, surveys, outreach events, and meetings
Attend community gatherings with the IRM as appropriate
Provide culturally safe, welcoming support to participants

Research & Needs Assessment Support

Support data collection through surveys, interviews, focus groups, and conversations
Assist with note-taking, transcription, and summarizing themes
Help map local Indigenous-serving organizations and community resources
Contribute to drafting sections of the Needs Assessment Report or data summaries

Program & Administrative Support

Support planning of community events, gatherings, or engagement activities
Help prepare materials, posters, handouts, communications, or social media content
Maintain records of outreach, engagement, and project activities
Assist with AONest user support (helping community members sign up or navigate the system)

Communications & Youth Voice

Help develop youth-friendly outreach materials
Provide youth perspective on barriers, strengths, and opportunities in York Region
Promote cultural safety, inclusion, and accessibility in all project activities

Skills & Learning Opportunities
This CSJ role offers hands-on learning in:

Indigenous community engagement
Trauma-informed practice and cultural safety
Community-based research
Communications, outreach, and event planning
Digital mental health tools (AONest)
Partnership building and system navigation
Professional development through mentorship by AO staff

Training and mentorship will be provided throughout.

Qualifications
Eligible Applicants Must:

Be between 15–30 years old (CSJ requirement)
Be legally entitled to work in Canada

We’re Looking For Youth Who:

Identify as Indigenous or have experience working with Indigenous communities
Are interested in community work, mental health, social services, or cultural programming
Are comfortable meeting new people and communicating with diverse community members
Are organized, reliable, and eager to learn
Can travel within York Region (transit or mileage support available)
Can work independently and with a team

No formal education or previous job experience is required.
Lived experience, community knowledge, and willingness to learn are valued equally.
