FACILITIES OPERATOR

Part-time, fixed term, approx. 16-20 hours per week, evening, late night, early morning, and weekend work required, June-September.

Toronto Botanical Garden (TBG) is a four-acre public garden and community hub offering free, year-round access to nature in the heart of Toronto. Welcoming more than 350,000 visitors annually, TBG connects people and plants through horticulture, environmental education, arts programming, and community events that foster sustainable communities and environmental stewardship.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Toronto Botanical Garden (TBG) is one of Toronto’s premier destinations for sustainable horticulture, environmental learning, and community connection. With free admission and more than 300,000 visitors each year, TBG provides an accessible, welcoming space for people of all ages to connect with the natural world. The Visitor Centre and surrounding grounds host TBG’s administrative offices, education programs, retail shop, plant sales, and a wide variety of public and private events, including concerts, weddings, festivals, conferences, and community gatherings.

Facilities Operators are integral to delivering an outstanding experience to every visitor. They ensure that the Visitor Centre and grounds are consistently clean, safe, accessible, and ready for daily use and events. As members of the Guest Experience Department, Facilities Operators support all areas of the organization and uphold the Garden’s mission through high-quality operations, maintenance, and custodial performance. Their professionalism, reliability, attention to detail, and pride in workmanship help define TBG as a place where people and plants thrive.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Facility Operations

Support daily operations of the Toronto Botanical Garden, including scheduled opening and closing procedures.
Adhere to a rigorous, time-sensitive work plan to ensure facilities are prepared for programs, events, and daily visitor traffic.
Uphold TBG’s commitment to accessibility by maintaining a barrier-free environment across entrances, pathways, washrooms, and public spaces.

Custodial & Housekeeping

Perform routine and scheduled cleaning tasks: sweeping, mopping, disinfecting, waste removal, glass cleaning, and replenishing washroom supplies.
Maintain high standards of cleanliness in lobbies, washrooms, classrooms, offices, and high‑traffic zones, ensuring all spaces are presentable and event ready.
Respond promptly to custodial issues such as spills, odours, or unexpected messes to minimize disruption and maintain visitor comfort.

Maintenance & Safety

Complete daily, weekly, and monthly inspection and maintenance checklists with accuracy.
Conduct minor repairs and replacements (lightbulbs, ceiling tiles, soap dispensers, toilet seats, cartridges, paper towel units, etc.).
Monitor for hazards (e.g., burnt-out lights, leaks, icy patches) and address or report them promptly to the Facility Lead.
Assist with maintaining safe, organized storage areas and equipment rooms.

Event & Program Support

Set up, move, arrange, and store furniture (tables, chairs, podiums) for programs and events, ensuring accuracy and adherence to event diagrams or setup instructions.
Reset spaces quickly and efficiently between bookings to meet schedule demands.
Support deliveries, vendor access, and scheduled maintenance by directing contractors to appropriate locations.

Customer Service & Professional Conduct

Demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, and strong customer service when interacting with visitors, volunteers, staff, and clients.
Provide clear, respectful communication and offer assistance when visitors require directions, support, or accessibility accommodations.
Present a calm, solutions-focused approach when addressing operational challenges or last-minute event needs.
Communicate end-of-shift updates, including outstanding tasks, supply needs, or operational concerns.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in custodial, building operations, facilities support, or a related role an asset.
Ability to work within a structured, time-sensitive schedule and manage tasks efficiently.
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with a courteous and professional demeanour.
Commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and barrier-free environment for all visitors.
Comfortable performing physically active work, including lifting, bending, carrying, and extended periods of standing or walking.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with reliable attendance and punctuality.
Basic knowledge of cleaning practices, safe equipment use, and workplace safety protocols (training provided).

WORK CONDITIONS

Part-time, on-site position; evening, late night/early morning, and weekend shifts are required depending on event schedules.
Work performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Role requires regular lifting of up to approximately 40 lbs (e.g., tables, chairs, equipment).
