The Opportunity
The Business Partner, Issues Communications, collaborates across the organization to manage and communicate key issues initiatives and is responsible for crafting clear and engaging external communications across a wide range of subjects and channels. The role manages communications of sensitive and confidential matters impacting our brand and employees and creates opportunities to drive engagement and connection through earned media and digital platforms.
This role works cross-functionally with all departments including (but not limited to) Executive team, HR, Operations, Legal, Client Experience, Marketing, Client Development, and Stakeholder Engagement to respond to issues that arise in the field or through media and manage communication strategies that support the organization’s business objectives and drive client engagement and connections. This role ensures that sensitive and confidential issues communications, key strategy initiatives, change management, critical incidents, and crisis communications processes are managed in a compelling and tactful way. In addition, the Business Partner, Issues Communications will serve as part of our Corporate Brand Office – developing and managing communication standards and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement on issues and proactively building strategies to address them.

As a Business Partner of Issuess Communications, you will:
- Communications Plans: Create, implement, and oversee communications, including sensitive and confidential communications and engagement strategies that effectively communicate strategic information to the public, our clients and external stakeholders. Manages and contributes to the organization’s earned media proactive and reactive communications calendar.
- Writing and Editing Materials: Content creation including, strategy briefs, change management initiatives, press releases, quotes, proactive campaign oversight, and support of key strategic issues from across the organization to support our Strategy, business goals and objectives.
- Strategic Communications Support and Advice: Working collaboratively with Directors, Vice Presidents, and the LEO to provide support and guidance on issues communications strategies to ensure a consistent approach across the organization. Partners cross-functionally with teams and leaders across the business. Designs earned media programs that foster two-way dialogue with the executive team, and ensures information is shared with our employees in a timely and considered way.
- Crisis Communications and Issues Management: The Business Partner, Issues Communications is identified as a key member of Technical Safety BC’s crisis communications team. Responsible for managing external communications during critical incidents and crisis situations, including, issues management and proactive planning activities, partnering with key stakeholders to ensure business continuity, and keeping the organization and the public/clients informed during a crisis or incident.
- Content audits: Performs regular content and audience analysis and feedback channels to gain insights that drive ongoing external communication strategies. Continually improves, measures, and evaluates effectiveness of earned communications strategy and methods.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience you have:
- Requires a degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related discipline supplemented by a minimum of 5 to 7 years of experience in communications.
- Experience preparing stories, pitches, blogs, issues updates, briefings notes, events, speeches and presentations.
- Experience planning and managing external earned communication plans, strategies, and programs.
- Experience with issues management and crisis communications, including sensitive, confidential information.
- High level of confidentiality and tact.
- Experience with earned media communication tools and platforms.
- Experience assessing the effectiveness of external issues communications programs.
- Experience advising members of the senior management and executive team.
- Ability to quickly establish priorities and meet deadlines.
- Experience working closely with internal and external cross-functional teams and stakeholders to achieve communications and business objectives.
- Superior writing, editing, and strategic communications skills.
- Advanced web-based skills, including sentiment analysis, social measurement, presentations, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and other platforms when required.
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills.
- Self-starter with excellent presentation skills.
