Full job description

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to support our growing financial operations and ensure the long-term sustainability of the organization. The Senior Accountant plays a key role in managing the day-to-day accounting and financial reporting functions of The Confluence. This position works closely with the Director of Finance to ensure accuracy, integrity, and compliance across all financial activities, including grant funding administration, monthly closes, budgeting, and audit preparation. The ideal candidate is highly organized, proactive, and committed to supporting a mission-driven nonprofit environment.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Accounting

Assist in preparing timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
Maintain the general ledger, ensuring all entries are accurate and properly documented.
Analyze discrepancies for management review.
Support month-end and year-end close processes, including accruals, reconciliations, and financial analyses.
Assist in preparation of internal reporting packages for leadership.
Assist in the preparation of Finance Audit Committee package for Board of Directors

Grant Funding & Compliance

Track and monitor restricted and unrestricted grant funds to ensure proper allocation and compliance.
Prepare financial reports for grantors in accordance with award requirements and deadlines.
Review grant budgets, assist with grant proposals, and ensure expenditures align with funding guidelines.
Maintain documentation for audits and funder reviews.

Budgeting & Forecasting

Assist in the annual budgeting process, including department-level support and data consolidation.
Monitor budgets throughout the year, identifying variances and recommending corrective actions.
Support multi-year financial planning and scenario analysis.

Internal Controls & Audit

Help maintain strong internal controls and recommend improvements to financial procedures.
Assist in the preparation of audit schedules and support the external audit process.
Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP) and organizational policies.

Accounts Payable, Receivable & Payroll

Assist in processing of invoices, payments, and reimbursements.
Ensure accuracy and timeliness of accounts receivable entries, deposits, and revenue tracking.
Assist payroll administration and reconciliation.
Maintain vendor accounts and assist with contract and procurement documentation.

Systems & Process Improvement

Assist with maintenance and optimization of accounting systems and financial software.
Identify opportunities to streamline processes and improve financial workflows.
Support implementation of new financial tools or technologies.

Qualifications

CPA designation or working towards CPA designation preferred.
3–5+ years of progressive accounting experience, nonprofit sector would be an asset.
Strong knowledge of ANSPO and/or ASPE and fund accounting best practices.
Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, mission-driven mindset.

Working Conditions

Onsite work environment.
Occasional evening or weekend during audits, or peak financial periods.
Ability to work across historic, outdoor, and administrative spaces within the parkland.
