BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services (BCMHSUS)
Quality & Safety Planning
- Co-chairs the BCMHSUS Quality & Safety Committee in partnership with BCMHSUS Director, Quality, Safety and Accreditation.
- Co-leads the development of the BCMHSUS Quality and Safety Plan in partnership with the BCMHSUS Director, Quality, Safety and Accreditation
- Guides the co-development of BCMHSUS quality priorities and indicators, ensuring alignment with partner organizational objectives and priorities), in partnership with the BCMHSUS Director, Quality, Safety and Accreditation
- Supports monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of clinical quality (indicator selection and review), in partnership with BCMHSUS Director, Quality, Safety and Accreditation
Patient Safety
- Models, shepherds, and champions a Medical Staff Culture that is committed to Patient Safety and Quality
- Coordinates and chairs Mortality & Morbidity meeting to review issues or themes identified through reporting
- Provides medical lens to Patient Safety Learning System and Quality & Safety reviews, including clinical insights and understanding of patient care processes.
- Engages medical staff in the Patient Safety Event Review process
- Responds to Patient Safety Learning System submissions pertinent to or involving BCMHSUS program, and act as a medical staff resource to the Quality and Safety Leads in BCMHSUS Programs in Patient Safety Event Reviews
- Regular participation and reporting to the BCMHSUS Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) of learnings and feedback pertinent to BCMHSUS Patient Safety Event Reviews process, including any recommendations from Patient Safety Event Reviews (with due consideration for section 51 requirements and solicitor client privilege), in partnership with the BCMHSUS Director, Quality, Safety and Accreditation
Indigenous Specific Anti-Racism
- Contributes to the Indigenous Health Truth and Reconciliation Action Plan for BCMHSUS
- Provides a medical staff lens in the review of PSLS events involving Indigenous patients (in collaboration with Indigenous Health teams as applicable) and monitors trends, facilitates concise reviews and/or escalates for ISRD review as needed
- Engages medical staff in follow-up and navigation through changes that need to occur in clinical practice.
Accreditation
- Provides Medical leadership perspective in the Accreditation process
- Supports medical staff communication and engagement
- Supports completion of medical staff related education
- Supports medical staff compliance with Accreditation Canada Standards
- Supports accreditations activities and meetings related to BCMHSUS
Patient Experience
- In co-leadership, promotes a culture of including perspectives of those who use or are impacted by services and care into planning, design and decision making.
- Together with administration, uses Patient Care Quality Office and Patient Experience data review to inform quality improvement work at Quality & Safety Committee, in partnership with the BCMHSUS Director, Quality, Safety and Accreditation
- Responds to PCQO, Ombudsperson, and other similar complaints that are medical staff-related
- Champions meaningful patient and family engagement in Quality and Patient Safety work, and the ensure patient experience voice is used to inform Quality Improvement priorities for BCMHSUS, in partnership with the BCMHSUS Director, Quality, Safety and Accreditation
Quality Control & Quality Improvement
- Supports trainees (e.g. residents, fellows) and staff education of Quality and Safety methodologies and culture development within BCMHSUS
- Participates in ongoing evaluation and improvement of Department data capture and reporting with respect to Quality Assurance, Quality Control and improvement (e.g. RedCap Database, CST Data Exports)
- Builds medical staff Quality Improvement capacity within BCMHSUS in partnership with the PHSA Physician Quality Improvement (PQI) program, including increasing the participation of BCMHSUS medical staff in the PHSA PQI program, providing quality improvement leadership and coaching support to medical staff working in BCMHSUS

Qualifications
- A Medical Degree and eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.
- Experience in medical leadership in progressively more complex and leadership roles
- Understanding of quality and leadership structures at BCMHSUS
- Previous experience/training with PHSA PQI preferred
- Master’s Degree in Health Administration, Business Administration, or Public Health would be an asset.
- Maintains professional memberships and associations.
