Job Overview
NSE is currently looking for an individual to join our team as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst. The successful candidate will have a solid background in GIS (analysis and cartography) through education and/or work experience. Strong technical knowledge, including experience with Arcade, ArcGIS Dashboards, and ArcGIS Experience Builder is required for this role. Knowledge of Python is considered an asset. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, as the successful candidate will collaborate regularly with our multidisciplinary team and contribute to client-facing deliverables. Knowledge of ecology and natural heritage through education or work experience is considered an asset. An interest and willingness to learn about ecology and natural heritage is required as this is foundational to our work.
This role will report directly to our GIS Specialist(s) and will have direct and regular interaction with our team of ecologists and project managers. In this position, the candidate will work with other team members to deliver projects by participating in a range of project tasks, including analysis of geospatial datasets, automation and scripting, building ArcGIS Dashboards, data entry and management, production of high-quality mapping / cartographic products, and background data collection and review. The role will be office-based with the potential opportunity for occasional participation in field work, based on interest of the successful candidate.
This position is ideal for someone interested in working in environmental consulting as a GIS Analyst. You will have the opportunity to learn about and apply ecological and natural heritage information to support a range of projects from impact assessment to urban tree canopy studies.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Work with geospatial data
- Manage field and project data collected digitally in-field by our team of ecologists through Fieldmaps and ArcGIS Online.
- Manage and work with a broad range of internally and externally generated datasets and ensure data integrity and appropriate data usage.
- Assist in the creation, generation, editing/digitizing and maintenance of geospatial data for a range of project applications.
- Analyze geospatial data to produce high quality outputs such as mapping for reports and presentations.
- Develop and maintain Arcade expressions to automate ArcGIS Online workflows and custom ArcGIS Online applications.
- Designing, building, and maintaining ArcGIS Dashboards and related web-based products.
- Undertake background data collection and review, including assisting with database management and GIS system administrative tasks.
- Contribute to high quality reports, formatting of reports, and other project deliverables on time and within budget.
- Attend project meetings and communicate technical GIS concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
QUALIFICATIONS, ATTRIBUTES and EXPERIENCE
Core Requirements
- Degree or diploma in Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Studies, Geography, Geomatics, Planning or a related field
- Education in and/or work experience with GIS with specific skillsets as outlined in the role description
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in:
- Interpreting and analysing geospatial datasets and producing high quality mapping
- Understanding core principles for geospatial data (projections, data management best practices, georeferencing, digitizing, etc.)
- Working with ESRI products (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey 123, etc.)
- Scripting and basic automation
- Writing Arcade expressions for symbology, pop-ups, labelling, and dashboard configurations
- Designing, building, and publishing ArcGIS Dashboards for project and client deliverables
- Experience with QGIS is considered an asset
- Cartography
- Spatial analysis
- Interpreting geospatial data. Specific experience in using and interpreting ecological datasets is an asset
- Interest in, and basic knowledge of ecological principles and ecological surveys. Experience conducting surveys or using standard ecological protocols is considered an asset

REMUNERATION
Pay range: $55,000-$75,000 per annum, commensurate with skills and demonstrated experience based on a standard 37.5-hour work week. Our goal is to find the right fit, we are open to entry-level to mid-career; this is reflected in the salary range.

LOCATION
NSE’s office is in Cambridge, ON. This role will be based out of the office full time. Infrequent remote work (e.g., from home) may be accommodated where technical requirements for completing specific assigned tasks or duties allow.
