We are seeking a seasoned Integration Developer specializing in IBM App Connect Enterprise (IBM ACE) to play a critical role in our enterprise database migration from mainframe systems to the AWS Cloud. In this role, you will design and build modern integration services, message flows, and REST APIs to ingest data from mainframe message queues and securely route, transform, and redirect it into the cloud ecosystem.
While your primary expertise lies in enterprise service bus (ESB) development and messaging infrastructure, familiarity with legacy mainframe environments (COBOL, PL/I, JCL, DB2) is a highly valued asset that will allow you to seamlessly bridge the gap between core legacy systems and the cloud.
Implementation Project Context
The initial assignment involves a large, multi-year enterprise implementation focused on modernizing how core business and customer data is exchanged and governed across systems and digital channels. The program is replacing tightly coupled legacy integrations with a modern, API-first and event-driven architecture, delivering a set of enterprise-grade REST APIs, cloud-based integration services, and asynchronous messaging capabilities that form the backbone of the platform. This includes implementation patterns leveraging publish/subscribe messaging, event-driven architecture (EDA), and change data capture (CDC) to support near real-time propagation of customer and business data changes across enterprise systems.
To facilitate this data redirection without disrupting core operations, mainframe systems are being modified to output data into message queues. Your mission is to build the middle-tier backbone using IBM ACE, constructing resilient message flows that consume these queues, transform the data, and expose it via AWS API Gateway and enterprise-grade REST APIs and cloud-based integration services. This architecture leverages publish/subscribe messaging, event-driven architecture (EDA), and change data capture (CDC) to support near real-time propagation of customer and business data changes to AWS.
Your future duties and responsibilities
. ESB & Message Flow Development: Design, develop, and maintain robust message flows within IBM ACE for data transformation, routing, and connectivity between legacy systems and AWS.
. ESB Package and Service Creation: Build modern, reusable integration services that cleanly connect backend enterprise messaging infrastructure with cloud destinations.
. Data Transformation: Map and transform complex legacy data structures (originating from mainframe environments) into modern JSON/XML formats suitable for cloud consumption.
. Asynchronous Messaging: Implement and manage publish/subscribe and asynchronous messaging patterns leveraging enterprise queuing systems.
. Migration Integration: Support event streaming and CDC-based integration patterns to ensure reliable, near real-time data flow to AWS during the migration phase.
. Architectural Resilience: Ensure high availability, fault tolerance, strict security controls, and clean service boundaries across all built integration components.
Required qualifications to be successful in this role
Mandatory Technical Experience (Integration & ESB)
. Enterprise Service Bus: Deep proficiency in IBM App Connect Enterprise (ACE)
. Message Flow & Transformation: Extensive experience building complex message flows, graphical data maps, ESQL, or Java transformations.
. Messaging Infrastructure: Hands-on experience with asynchronous messaging, pub/sub architectures, and enterprise queuing (e.g., IBM MQ, AWS SQS/SNS).
Highly Desirable / Excellent-to-Have (Mainframe & Cloud)
. Mainframe Familiarity: Experience or exposure to mainframe environments, including an understanding of COBOL, PL/I, JCL, CICS, or DB2 data structures.
. API Design: Strong expertise in developing, securing, and maintaining modern REST APIs and integration services.
. AWS Cloud Services: Familiarity with target cloud architectures and AWS services such as Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, SNS, or Kinesis.
. Data Migration Patterns: Exposure to Change Data Capture (CDC) mechanisms and near real-time data replication strategies.
General Background
. Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience.
. 10+ years of software engineering experience, with a heavy focus on middleware, ESB technologies, and enterprise data integration.
